A. AND P. SHOWS.

NORTHERN. i ’ Favourable weather, a record entry and varied display of exhibits, and a large f attendance of the public combined to j make the Northern Asrricultura 1 and Pas- 1 torn! Asßociatiou’s fifty-second annual show, held at Ranriora to-day. an unoualifted success. The strong vitality <.f tbe association was evidenced by (hr, fact that tbe number of entries (1222) constituted a. record for the show, the previous highest number being 3.3 G‘2, in 3 013. Tlie complete recovery from the depressing effects of tbe war has been very largely brought about, by the keen interest taken by the "Management Committee. Uurelaxed efforts to increase the membership have been attended with gratifj-ing success, and there lias been careful revision of the prize schedule to keep it up-to-date and of an attractive character, the eectious iu which the ladies are most interest'd having received soocial attention. The only difficulty that now confronts the executive is to find sufficient space in the produce shed for an effective display of the ladies’ and young people’s exhibits, and at the same lime provide rooms for the public to in- . «pect them. The president of the asso- ! via, tion. Air TT. Stalker, who is a real lire officer, his energetic lieutenants. Messrs W. A. Keleber and C. M’lntosh, who till the of See of vice-presidents, the enthusiastic General Committee, and secretary. Mr W. J. Young, are to be complimented upon Ibo completeness of the arrangements for the show. On this occasion. brass band music, a familiar feature of tbe show since the initial fixture in iB6O, gave place to the skirl o’ tlie pipes, the Caledonian Pipe Band having ‘ been engaged to provide the music for ] tbe day. Tn a brief reference to tlie exhibits it I may be noted (bat tbo entries in tho j (bree main sections were a few ir» excess i ot tho«o tor the previous show The draught, horses were a a usual an outstand- 1 mg feature of the show, the names of most ot the principal breeders in tho ; northern district, figuring extensively in ! I be catalogue. For some reason the third ’ j grand champion prize of a trophy valued 1 j at £2O for tho best two-year-old draught j ; of either eex attracted only one exhibit, j ' vtMc k was entered by Mr James Wyllie. * } year’s winner. There was a meri- j I torious show of saddle and harness horses i and ponies, and in the majority of the *, classes there was etroDg competition. In the cattle section most of the short- » norn classoe were comprised of exhibits, ! i rom the stud herds ox Messrs K. Peach 1 end s. .Smith, all of which were of hi-h quality. Both tire Jersey and Friesian classes were well filled, and there was a good show of milch cows. Tho fat cattle section was almost neglected. The show of sheep maintained a high } standard of quality, but in a large pro- ' portion of the classes there was no in- : dividual competitors. Thie. however, doe.- j tot. apply to the Corr led ales, tliis popular J breed being strongly represented by exhibits from tbo best of the flocks in North Canterbury. Fat sheep were romparativeH H, wall in number, the long spell of bi'oken weather no doubt being responsible for the shortage. Of late years tbo pigs' section has been all but neglected. On this occasion, however. fourteen exhibits were penned, a decidedly pleasing contrast to last year's total of two. There, were nineteen entries of Blieeo •jogs, all of which were of serviceable appearance. Tbe ladies’ and girls’ sections, including i homo and dairy produce, cookery, fancy j and art work, tnado an attractive rlis- % play, and the quality of the exhibits v as of a high standard. There was a small i show of flowers and tho duties of tbe i judgfo were light. In the Technical School?’ section prizes ' offered to boys for the best plan of o i farmyard suitable For a. I<V> acre farm, a.ml to girls for the best plan of a kit- j chon, scullery, pantry. washhouse and bathroom, all to be drawn to scale, pro- ' vided some very good work from sixteen j boys and twenty-seven girls. There were eleven business and trade ! glands on the ground, all of which attracted a good deal of notice. j SHEEP. > Fine Combing Merino.—Rain over oiphiccn months (J 1) —J.
