Poisoued champagne is believed to bo the cause of a tragedy m the most fashionable quarter of Streatham. The bodies of Ernest Coates, an engineer, his wife, the latter’s unmarried daughter, Airs Townsend, and her son, Henry Alarm, by a previous marriage, were found locked in a maisonette. The police are trying to solve the mystery, and also to discover by whom the poison was administered. Coates wrote three letters, including one to the Coroner, which led to the police forcing an entry. A maid employed by Coa.tes states that she was sent away for the week-end. The neighbours state that, the deceased wero of eccentric habits, and lived* secluded lives.
