ALLEGED FALSE PRETENCES.

CHARGES AGAINST ALICE LOMAS.

further remand GRANTED.

Alice Lomas, a woman forty-two years of fige, who was recently extradited from Melbourne, appeared on remand before Mr Wyvem Wilson, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, on four charges of obtaining money by false pretences. Th© charges were that she, with intent to defraud, did obtain from Lazarus Wolfe Balkind, money lender of Christchurch, the sums of £2O, £25, £7O and £7O, by means of a false pretence, to wit, by falsely representing that she owned certain furniture then at Durham House, Durham Street, Christchurch, and did execute an instrument under the Chattels Transfer Act, 1908, by way of security over the furniture. The prosecution was a private one, Mr W. Cracroft Wilson appearing for the informant. The accused was represented by Mr H. IC. M’Dougall. Mr Wilson asked for a romand for a week.

Mr M’Dougall said it was the second remand asked for and he wanted an assurance tKjit the case would be gone on with when next called. Accused was brought back from Victoria in ample time for the present sessions of the Supreme Court. There was a sound defence to all the charges and he would like his Worship to admit her to bail again. Mr Wilson: My friend has elected to keep this as a private prosecution and that is the cans© of these adjournments. I may have to ask for a further remand later. The Magistrate : What is the reason for the remand to-day P Mr 'Wilson : I understand that fresh informations are to be laid. Three were laid yesterday. Also the witnesses are not here. In reference to missing the session of the Supreme Court it was hoped to catch the session. The Magistrate : The delay seems to be unavoidable. I suggest a remand till Friday. A remand was accordingly granted until Friday, November 4, the accused being admitted to bail in her own recognisance of £SO and one surety of £SO.
