JAPAN AROUSED.

FffiEIGN OFFICE REPLIES TO NORTHCLIFFE’S WARNING. By Telegraph-Press Association-Copyriarht. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received October 14, 9.20 a.m.) TOKIO, October 13. Lord Northcliffo's statement cabled to tho London “Times” on October 3 in which ho was quoted as warning Australia of the danger to its unoccupied areas from a northern power, has aroused tho Japanese Foreign Office. On its behalf Baron Ijuij stated : “ Perhaps it is improper to express an opinion without reading the complete text of Lord Northcliffo’s statement. Although ho studiously and seemingly cautiously avoided direct reference to Japan, the general tone indicated that he had tried to picture Japan as a menace to Australia. 11 If by the teeming millions that he fears would overwhelm Australian AngloSaxons lie means tho Japanese, and if by an ambitious and covetous power which some day might become Australia’s enemy he means Japan—then such a statement coming from a person of 1 jord Northcliffe’s influence must not be passed over lightly. “ The goodwill and friendly spirit on Japan’s part towards Australia has been cultivated under tlie Anglo-Japanef-o alliance. There is no room for alienation of this spirit. Japan has looked towards Australia as a possible outlet for surplus population. Japan realises the importance of maintaining good relationship with Australia for tho peace of the Pacific for which Japan has not spared any effort.”
