It is not generally known that 90 per cent of the world's cloves is the monopoly of the British Empire, and that they are grown entirely upon two tiny islands off the east coast of Africa— Zanzibar and Pemba. The plantations are owned chiefly by Arabs, and extend over the greater part of both islands. The clove tree closely resembles an olive tree in appearance, and grows to the height of about forty feet.
