The Canterbury Members of Parliament Committee met to-day to consider the railway cut. It was decided to a-sk the Gorernment to call Parliament together at once in order that the cut might be discussed from both the local and national points of view, or, in the alternative, postpone the operation of the cut until Parliament met in the ordinary way. It was also decided that the Progress League and the Chamber of Commerce he asked to meet the members in conference.

The librarian of the Canterbury Public Library states that July was a very successful month at. the library. In the circulating department 17,673 volumes were issued compared with 17,045 during July of last year. In the reference department 5861 books were consulted, this being 1413 more than the number consulted during July, 1920. In the Juvenile Library 1750 books were taken out, compared with. 1669 issued in the corresponding month last year. The new subscribers enrolled number 114. and the juvenile members number 894, an increase of 109 over the number for July, 1920. During the month 136 new books were added to the circulating department, 32 to the reference, and 19 to the Juvenile Library. In the Arbitration Court this morning awards were issued in the cases of the Canterbury flourmiHers’ employees and the Christchurch plasterers. In both cases they embodied without alteration the recommendations of the Conciliation Council, which tho parties agreed to accept. Tho term of the former award is from Juno 4 last in respect, of wages, and from the date of the award in the other provisions, until June 4, 1923. In the case of the second award the term is from March 31 till the same date in 1923. On behalf of the Canterbury paper bag, carton and bos makers, Mr C. Renn asked for an amendment of their current award, with the object of bringing the wages of females into line with the wages paid to females in Wellington.
