EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [Fbom Ocr Correspondent.] ADVANCE NEW BRIGHTON. Several very interesting meetings and conferences have been held during the week wbicjh, if successfully carried into operation, will have a very important effect upon the welfare of the borough. Much interest locally is being taken in the agitation in the Avonside Riding of the Heathcote County, which is the area between the city boundary at Mile Read and the New Brighton boundary, between the main tram and the -Bower Bridges. There seems to be no doubt that this area will join up with the city. If this is done the way is immediately clear for the borough to do likewise. If the proposal brought forward by Mr Sullivan, M.P., at a meeting of the Progress League to utilise reserves in New* Brighton for afforestation purposes is carried into effect it will he a fine thing for New Brighton and the city. Recently Sir Francis Bell promised Mr Sullivan to subsidise an amount, £. for £, up to £-500 for tree planting in New Brighton. It is hoped that the opportunity now presented will not he lost. The appeal is a Can- . terbury one. Matters in connection with the huge ; carnival which it is proposed to hold in the Christinas holidays, are going on smoothly. In this connection Mr Sullivan has done magnificent work for the borough. A meeting will he held immediately the Grand National Week is over, when the whole of the details will be ready to submit to a public meeting. Work will then he commenced right away. In his statement at the council meeting on Monday night, the Mayor, Mr J. Gamble, referred with pleasure to the inauguration of the new tramway time-table between 7 and 8 a.m. ITo had been informed by the General Manager (Mr F. Thompson") that the experiment liad been a success, and flint Mr Thompson was entirely satisfied . The council have decided to ask Mr Steffens, the proprietor of the miniar lure railway, for a personal interview before the railway is placed on the beach. Councillors referred to the necessity for marram grass planting on the sand hills between Beresford and Hood Streets. It was pointed out that if this is not done soon the season will be lost. It lias been decided to take advantage as far as possible of tho Government’s generous offer to subsidise tree planting £ for* £. Appreciative reference continues to bo made at council meetings to the 1 work on behalf of tho borough of Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P.. when 1 undertakings engineered by Mr Sullivan on behalf of the borough are consolidated. Shopkeepers of Sea View Road are looking towards tho council to do something to abate the dog nuhrmco. which is very prevalent on Sea View Road. Farland having taken over Mr Gobbe’s interest. BOWLING. Tho annual smoke concert held in the Kai Ora Tea Rooms was a very successful affair, the room being crowded with local players and visitors. It was mentioned by Mr Kibblew bite that tho inauguration of the club had been mooted in that very room, less than eight years ago, and one of the prime movers was this year’s presiednt, Mr E. Tillyshort. It was pleasing to see the highest honour the club could offer hold by a different member each year. PLENTY OF FISH. A feature of the week has been the abnormal catches of fisli made off the pier. Cod lias . predominated. Probably the extreme marine conditions have also had something to do with the good fishing. SOUTH BRIGHTON NOTES. A surprise party of about thirty people visited Mrs and Mr Gra miner on Saturday night, and a very enjoyable evening was spent. A musical program mo was contributed by Messrs Gibson, Fisher, Hulme, Osborne, Weaver * and Campbell*. During the evening ft collection taken up for the hall fund was very liberally responded to. Requests and recommendations from tho Progress League occupied a prominent place at the last council meeting. Residents in. the locality are incensed at tho improper use which is being made of tho domain round about the Beatty Street entrance. The league has rnado a request that the gate there should bo locked at night. The oounc il has decided to place the matter in the hands of the police department. The league has asked for the council’s co-operation in the matter of the inauguration of a slot machine. The position wanted is at the corner of Jcrvois Street and Estuary Road. Tho league is willing to bear a share of any deficiency’, but do not believe thero will be any. Til league aro also- against granting any farther permits for camping in the South Domain. THE PICTURES. In spite of the cold weather a large | number attended the pictures last week. Next week the following attractions aro announced On Saturday and Monday ‘' Dinty ” will be screened, featuring Wesley Barry, who made such a hit in f * Daddy Longlegs.” Eugene O’Brien will appear on Tuesday and Wednesday in “ A Fool and .
