Scott (Whakatane), no arc visiting Christchurch, are staying at the United Service. • Miss Bridgeman (Dunedin) arrived in Christchurch yesterday and is the guest of Miss M. Tabart, Cashmere Hills. Mr H. C. Pockley and his daughter, Miss Marcia Pockley, who hare been touring in the south, are back m Christchurch, and are staying at the Clarendon. The staff of the National Bank of New Zealand have issued invitations for a dance to be held in the Orange Hall, Worcester 'Street, on Thursday, Soptember 1. Mrs C. J.Ronaldson and Mrs J. S. Middleton hare consented to bo chaperones. Tbo committee consists of Miss D. A. Tavernier, Miss I>. M. Bellanev, Mr R. Morgan and Mr G. J. G. M’Hargf At the Sunny side Montal Hospital on Wednesday evening the patients held high revelry at a fancy-dress dance, many of the costumes being very interesting. During ft ho evening several of the patients gave musical and elocutionary items, and Miss Grace Brackenridge and Miss Gladys Brackenridge danced Highland dances. The nurses and staff were present and helped to j make the evening a. success, special ere'dit being due to the matron and Mr Brandon. Dr and Mrs Beale were present. The music was supplied by Miss Macdonald. A small surprise party was taken to the home of Mr ami Mrs C. K. Wllale, in Durham Street, last evening, and ultimately became a dance. The self-invited guests took supper with them, and the evening passed off most enjoyablv. Amongst those present were:—Mr and Mrs M. Arlow, Mr and Mrs Patton. Miss Macdonald, Miss Vera. Thomson, Miss Flora Macdonald, Miss P. Flood, Miss N. Bowen, Miss E. Kerr, Miss M’llcer, Miss N. Smith, Miss Clark and Miss Burrell ; Messrs R. T. Cowper, G. Parkinson, Tv. Clark, T. Atkinson, L. Jewels, P. Paterson, Frankish and Delahunly. A very successful dance was held last evening by Gilby's Old Girls’ Association in the Avon Rowing Club boathouse. Tbo room was tastefully decorated with the association's colours, yellow and black. The chaperones were Mesdames G. Scars© and C. Mosley. Amongst those present were : —Mrs S. Perrin, Misses J- Johnston. V. Gilders, L. Werren, A. Nelson, D. Ramsav, T. Prvcfe, W. Collins, D. Pavne, J Donnelly. M. Clark. V, Timms, A. Walker, Ritchie (2). M. Stewart: Messrs S. Perrin, T). Lemming, H. Wise, J. Willis, H. Robinson, F. Stewart. C. Watson, Mosley, J. Gil by, D. Gilders. G. Osborne and A. Williams. Musk- was supplied by Mr Willyams’s orchestra. A social and dance promoted by the Limvood Football Club, was held in the Orange Hall on Thursday night. Th© interior was tastefully decorated with shields, baskets and streamers of the club’s colours, green and black, and a most cnjojable evening was si>ent. Th© lady members of the committee, Misses. B. Cooper, N. Rogers and D. Vizer, attended to th© supper, and th© success of th© entertainment waa mainly due to their energy. Mr A. Sutherland provided the music, and Misses Cooper and E. Loader contributed musical items. The club proposes holding a fnrther danc4 on September 8, and to wind up the season with a r aney dress ball, at a later date. Looks? Quality ? Or both? Mies Alice M’Laren (South Canterbury) will be the guest of Mrs Georgo Rhodes for race week. The Edgeware Bowling and Croquet Club held their third social and dance on Wednesday evening, in the Win ton Street Hall. There was a. very large attendance. Vocal items given by Miss Hope were much appreciated. The music was f-upplied by Air Greenwood (piano), assisted by Mr Bennington (cornet). The returned soldiers of Heathcote held their annual ball on Wednesday in th© Club Hall, which was prettily decorated with evergreens, ribbons and a. fine display of coloured lights. There wore about seventy couples present, and much praise is due to Messrs Lowe, Perkins and Fletcher for their untieing efforts to make the function a success. Music was supplied by Mr AAithors’s orchestra. A dainty supper was attended to by th© ladies and everything passed off well. __ The annual ball of th© Socialists’ A People’s Club took place last evening in the Art Gallery. There was a good attendance and * the function proved thoroughly enjoyable. The hall and supper tables were decorated with the club colours, blue, gold and crimson. Miss MacDonald’s orchestra played the music for the dances and Air J. 1 lood acted as AI.C. During the evening the president of ;the club (Rev J. H. Chappie) congratulated th© members on the success that Itad attended their efforts during the v year. ITo appealed to thorn to continue their interest in tho club and to hoJp to uphold its ideals. $ The members of the Linwood-Rieh-rnoncl branch of the British and Foroigu Bible Society met on Friday afternoon at the residence of Airs J. R. Brunt, Buccleugh Street, Linwood, to arrange for the forthcoming collecting campaign which takes place this month. Airs Brunt presided. Mrs Sowden, general secretary of the Christchurch Auxiliary, and Airs Brunt spoke, outlining the aims and objects of the society. The collecting areas were arranged bv tho president. Airs Brunt, and the local secretary. Mrs Douds and the following ladies agreed to make a house-to-house campaign in the districts allotted to them. Mesdames Sands, M’Konzie, Rule, Brew ins, Main, S. Orchard. England, Kershaw, Gibson, Fleck, Dixon. Green, AY. A. Taylor, lleaby, and Alisses Buchanan (2), Kinlev, Hustan, Lill and Clark. At tho close of th© business Airs Brunt, president, entertained the members at afternoon tea.
