Although it was officially announced that Lowe v/ould compete in both singles in the first day matches, Wocsnam participated instead of him in the first match No reason for the change is assigned. Lowe defeated Hawkea, 6-4, 6-4, 6-L In the first match, Andersoi: defeated \V coon am, 4-6, G-2, 6-4, 6-4. Anderson, who started weakly in the first set, being unable to accommodate himself to Wooanam's fast service, warmed up rapidly, but then oecame erratic, and Woosnam won the Inst live games. Anderson won the second set easily. In the fourth set” he won tlif? first two games and lost the third by double faulting, but retrieved himself in the two last games. 'H*© second match went quickly to Lowe, Hawkea being decidedly off his game. Tlie Austra.ian’6 play, though spirited at times, was disappointing. He was weakening game after until the final set. Lowe’s tennis was faultless. The points of the set are as follow : First set—Lowe 34. Hawkes 37. Second set—Lowe 33, Hawkes 24.
