BURIED IN LANDSLIDE.
MISHAP 70 WELLINGTON TRAIN. NOBODY INJURED. (Pur Press Association.) WELLINGTON, August o. A mishap occurred to the train which left Thorndon at 5.10 last night for Johnsonville. Half way between Ngaio and Khandallah a landslip of a considerable magnitude fell on the leading engine of the train, which was being towed up the hill by two engines. The leading engine was buried in soggy earth, softened by the heavy rains, to the smokebox, and its bogey was derailed. Fortunately neither the engine-driver nor the fireman were injured. A wreckage gang was dispatched immediately. Passengers by the expresses from Napier and New Plymouth were transhipped at the slip with the luggage and brought on to Thorndon by special trains. Both trains were about two hours in arriving. The wreckage gang succeeded in extracting the buried engine, which was virtually undamaged. The slip was cleared for passing trains before midnight. and the main trunk express left immediately after the slip had been cleared.
