j A considerable amount of petty ! thieving is reported from the suburbs just now. The latest phase at Riccarton is a raid on the morning papers which have been delivered on to subscribers’ lawns. A Press Association message from Wellington states that it is estimated that the total population of the Dominion on June 30 was 1,284.050. Between April 1 and June 30 births exceeded deaths by 3768 and immigration exceeded emigration by 561. A Press Association message from Wellington says that a private lettei received in Wellington from Niue island states that in connection with the recent murder of policeman Martin one of the accused has been sentenced to death and another Native, Ulu Motu, to ten years’ imprisonment. At a recent examination in first aid to the injured, held at Sumner under the auspices of the St John Ambulance Association, the following were successful :—Me.sdames A. Alexander. E. R. Bates, C. Regan, widow, Sydenham ; Patrick Hillary, miner, Christchurch. Treatment of sheep was laid down in part of the demands put forward by the Canterbury Shearers’ find Shed Hands’ Union at the Arbitration Court yesterday. The union asked that : No shearer shall kick or ill-treat any sheep. In case a shearer turns out a sheep badly cut or insufficiently tarred he shall fit once sew and tar such wounds in his pen, or otherwise treat or dress the sheep as directed by the person in charge of the shed, but no shearer shall be required to tar his sheep in other cases. When a sheep is seriously cut or otherwise injured, the shearer shall immediately report the fact to tlio person in charge of the shed. We produce portraiture that pleases because of its naturalness.
