FREE SCHOOL BOOKS.

PR OTEST BY BOOKSELLERS.

[Ptr Press Association } WELLINGTON. July 5. The proposals for the free supply of school books for children attending public schools has caused some alarm to booksellers in the city. A deputation waited on the Central Chamber of Commerce to-day and sought to enlist its sympathy and co-operation to resist the proposal. It was urged that a large proportion of the profits of small booksellers was made lrorn the sale of school books. State control of these supplies would cripple many retailers. Tf nationalisation was to be applied, why not to school hoots? The deputation denied that large profits were made. The expenses of such State 'Departments fell on the shoulders of the taxpayers. Another point stressed was that the public revenue would lose the amount obtained bv taxation of booksellers’ profits. The chamber promised to consider the matter. The committee of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce supported a protest by booksellers against the proposed free supply of school books.
