Dr and Mrs Singer (Gisborne) a.re at the Clarendon.

Mrs Destock Reid is the guest, of Mrs Macandrew, St Albans, for a few days. Mrs John Rennie (Fendalton) and her little son, have returned from a risit to Inrercargill Mrs M. A. Chaffey arrived from Auckland yesterday and is staying at the Clarendon.

Mr and Mrs C. Shirley arrived from Wellington this morning, and are staying at the United Service. Miss Winifred Seales (Maronan), who baa been paying visits to relatives and friends in Christchurch, returned to Ashburton to-day.

Miss Dorothea Spinney, whose wonderful recitations of the Greek plays are so well remembered here, arrived this morning from Wellington, and is staying with Mies Muriel Cocks, Cashmere. Miss Spinney will be the guest of honour at an At Home at the Art Gallery this afternoon, given by the Mayoress.

The returned soldiers’ hall held recently at Pigeon Bay, was a great success, and the committee have every reason to he pleased wtih the result. The musio was supplied by the Lniversal Jazz Orchestra, directed by Mr Rasmussen. An excellent supper was provided, and dancing continued into the early hours of the morning. The Students’ Glee Club, oomposed of past and Drcseut pupils of .Miss Marian Woodhousc, gave the filth of a series of musical eveuingH on Saturday in the rooms of the Canterbury Women's Club. The programme conlisted of three glees. one part-song and *olos by the Misses Lees. Leithead, Frost and Wilkinson. Miss Wood playing the accompaniments.

The marriage took place in Auckland on June 30 of Miss Dorothy Alma Jones, only daughter of Mrs Jones and the late Mr Percy .Tones, formerly of AVairaka.u Estate, Te Aroha. and of Ashburton, to Mr Roy Hunter Duncan, of The Cove, Waipu, son of Mr T. Duncan, resident magistrate at Manjzaia, Cook Island*, and Mrs Duncan. The ceremony wtis performed at St Mark's Church. Remuera, the Rev 11. G. Coates officiating. The dance arranged by Miss Rigby’s Ladies’ Hockey Club was held on Friday evening at the Cadera, when a large number of (members and their friends spent an enjoyable evening. The members of the Canterbury Women’s Club yesterday afternooD gave an * At Home. ” to welcome a number of members recently elected to the club, and a delightful time was spent, both by tho guests and the hostesses. Lady Denuiston, in a cordial little speech, welcomed the new liorabers and hoped they would spend "nany happy hours at the club. The Jra wing-room was brightened with large bowls of white tree-lucerne, while the tea-tao.e decorations were of white daisies am. red berries. Mrs Lavie has returned to her home in Fendalton, after a long lidliday spent in the King Country and the Wanganui district.

The weeklv* meeting of the Social Welfare Guild was held last Friday. Reports were received from members who had been visiting the sick and needy cases, from the members of sewing committees and those who were eollecting funds. Employment had been found for several unemployed and variout ways and means of finding work and relief were discussed. During the week 240 garments had given to families who were badly in need of clothing. The warm clothing and cjuiits made from travellers’ samples were a credit to the ladies who had made them up and will provide warm clothing for" children. Mrs T. K. Taylor reported how the children’s home in Palmerston North was carried on. A homo is badly needed in Christchurch where children can be placed while the mother is in a nursing homej or la.id up at home. The position of the families where the father is a chronic invalid is very distressing a.nd Mrs HF. Herbert stated that their position is really worsp than the widows. When a man is committed to an Asylum his wife ami family get the widows’ pension, and yet the woman whose husband is a chronic invalid gets nothing and also has her husband to keep and look after.

A pleasant party was given by Mr and Mis Aldridge, in the Riccarton Town Hall, in honour of their son’s twenty-first birthday. The programme consisted of games and dances and items were given' by Miss Hazel Shier, Miss Gwen Shier and Miss V. Tolputt, Mrs Bull, Miss Notingham and Miss M’Gregor played extras.
