A comparison of the vital statistics for the six months of the present year and for tho corresponding period o: last year shows a remarkable decrease in births, deaths and marriages in the Christchurch district. The decrease in births and marriages might possibly be attributable to th© higher cost of giving, and tlie fewer deaths attributed to the absence of any serious epidemics this year. The following tables show the registrations for the month of June and for the six-monthiy period ended June 30, the figures for the corresponding periods last year being given in parentheses : BIRTHS. Month of June 191 (224). Halfyear ended June 30—1217 (1302). Decrease 85. MARRIAGES. Month of June—ln office 22 (24); certificates issued 97 (97). Half-yearly period—ln office 111 (142): certificates issued 600 (727). Total decrease 158. 'DEATHS. * Month of June—96 (140). Halfyearly period 518 (592). Decrease 74. Tlie figures fop the Lyttelton district are not included in the above tables.
