A comparison of the vital statistics for the six months of the present year and for tho corresponding period o: last year shows a remarkable decrease in births, deaths and marriages in the Christchurch district. The decrease in births and marriages might possibly be attributable to th© higher cost of giving, and tlie fewer deaths attributed to the absence of any serious epidemics this year. Tlie figures fop the Lyttelton district are not included in the above tables.
