0 During the season now drawing to a close, the progeny of 201 trotting >»res won money in the Dominion. Seven of these sires topped the £4OOO mark, the total credited to them being over £48,000, or about £BOOO in advance of the seven lending sires last season. As was the case a year ago and for three years before that, Harold Dillon is first on 1 lie lirt. a position it was evident he was likely to occupy before half the season had been disposed of. The amount of stakes won by his stock during the past twelve months, £12,340 10s, is a * record, the previous best being his ou n £11,463, two years ago. Petereta, who occupies second place with £726 610 s, was eighth with £2OBB two years ago and fourth with £5770 last year. He is now firmly established, and as his stock seems to improve with age, he should take an even more prominent position as the years roll on. 'Wildwood Junior, third with £6883 10s, occupied a similar position a year ago, and with something liko the same total. He had a large number of his contributors to his rather unlucky record, with no big wins to assist him. Rothschild is fourth with £6628. which is only a slight drop from the amount that gave him second place a year ago- He has for years past been one of the leading sires of the Dominion, and his record is a marvellous one, when it is remembered that ho was withdrawn from stud duty several years ago. Logan Pointer, who had £IBOS opposite his name last year, is on this Occasion credited with £5994 10s. This young American, sire is destined to go much further, as he is likely to be numerously represented in future seasons, while all his stock show speed. Gold Bell follows with £5135 and Lord PI mo with £4630, each of them experiencing a record seaeon. Yoftig M’ Kinney has had other good seasons, but with £2781 this is his best. It is a very big jump from last year, when his total was only £869. Nelson Bingen, who had only £725 a year ago, has £2-530 on this

occasion. He is another of the young Americans who is destined to have

great influence in future years. Brent Loeauda, whose total is £2163, compared with £2097 last year, came to the Dominion at the same time as Nelson Bingen, hut he has had the, more lengthy stud career of the pair. Advance has not quite held his

position with £2224 10s, compared with £2371 last year, while, Harold Rothschild, who suffered slump last season, when he won only £472, has come back strongly with £2175 10s. Galindo, with £2312 10s, is a little ahead of last season, when his total was £lßl7, but ho is a good deal short of his host record. Prince Imperial. who has been dead a long time, has done -a oil to get £1659, and he must gradually drop out. O.Y.M. is not holding his position, his total being £1622, a lug drop from last year’s figures, £3697- In all there are 150 sires whose progeny won I*loo or over this season, while fifty-one others come inner smaller amounts. Among the last batch arc several veterans, who will disappear altogether before long. hut. there arc others, notably Our Thorpe and Great Audibon, who will l>e. much higher up the list, when the figure* are totalled a year lienee. The weather was fine for training operations at Riccarton this morning. As a result of the recent weather, the trucks were heavy. The number seven grass track was open for fast, work, hut as there is very little grass leit on it the times were slow Macduff and Battle Scene opened proceedings with a spin over five furlongs, which they reeled off in Imm 6 2-sseo, finishing on terms, with !>oth going well. Counterstrok© and Marauder sprintcd half a mile in 51 4-ssec, Counterstroke having a slight advantage at the end. Royal Star jumped off at the mile post mid after going over a furlong he vas picked up by (laverock. They kept, close order most of the way, but Royal Mur had his head in front when lie finished up the mile in lmin 49 2-ssec. Mannwapnngn covered seven furlongs in lmin 40sec He strode out. free), al! the way and finished strongly. Mannish, with Red Gown a? a matover the. last sis furlongs, ran a mile, the last seven furlongs taking lmin 37see. Clean Sweep, Onslaught and Warlike were, companion a in a balf-mile sprint which occupied 54see, with ail three going comfortably at tlic end. Counter Attack sprinted half a mile in 51 3-ssec, moving resolutely all tuo way. Fabrinado and Bonnie Lady reeled off* half a mile in 53sec. with Fabrinadv going the better of the pair over the last furlong. Gang Awa was schooled over a round of the steeple base, fences. He jumped well hip ho appeared to be tiring at the end of hi.s task.

Mustard Pot, Moutoa Ivanova and Tb Reaver, separately, were given nseful tasks, without being set to do their best.

Royal Mac did strong pacing ohCe round the sand, and Gamecock was given a similar task over two circuits of the same track.

Riccarton stables will he well represented at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next week. S. Trilford will leave on Friday with Gamecock, Battle Scene and Royal Mac, while F. D. Jones has booked space for Moutoa. Ivanova. Mustard Pot and The fteavet. Some of the other trainers will go north on Saturday night. while the* balance will delay their departure till Monday.

The contest between B. Jarden und •T. MLennan for premier position among the trotting riders and drivers for the season is very close. Jarden’s success at Rnngiora on Saturday, with Kinthorpe. left the two horsemen level, and there is still one race to be decided, at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting this month.

The pacers Belle Logan and Goldstream have left B. Jarden’s stable and they are now being trained lit New Brighton by W. Bryce.

Our Thorpe, a great pacer in his day, who was reported recently to be in training again in Auckland, changed bauds recently. He is now owned by Mr K. Cameron, of Mongere, Auckland, and it is probable ho will do stud duty next season.

Northern reports state, that. Dean Dillon is to he got ready for the New Zealand Trotting Cup. When formerly raced here be was not easy to manage and he has done his most consistent racing on the right-handed tracks at Auckland.

At the conclusion of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting A. Hendrickson disposed of the trotter Sir 'Wildmoor. arid the hors© will remain in Auckland. The pacer Strategy was purchased by Hendricksen and returned with him.

A meeting of delegates from all the racing clubs m Southland will bo held, in Invercargill on August 3, when the question of appointing one starter for Southland and several other matters pertaining to the welfare of sport in the province will be discussed.

During the present season 696 horses won money under the Rules of Trotting in New Zealand: 348 winning £IOO or over and £346 getting less than £IOO.

How renflv few people are conversant, with the Rules of Racing was exemplified at Hastings last week, when Steepholm’s owner was discovered to be without a permit from the District Committee to train his own horse, and though the Gisborne mare was weighed out. and had done her preliminary, she hat] to ho brought hack to the paddock and withdrawn from the race. For many - vem ', s J writes 4 Glencoe.” an owner could t rain his own* horse, but last year it became necessary to get :t permit to do so Why this should be necessary is difficult to understand. Tn the case in question the owner is a heavy loser as he was under the expense of bringing his mare from Gisborne. She ran second at Napier, but presumably her owner will have to forfeit bis stake. However, there is one crumb of cqmfort for him, and that is that nil iiis nomination, acceptance, and riding fees will have to be returned, for if the marc was nor eligible to win, she could not be eligible to lose. That is only just.

The New reel mare Berceuse, by Birkenhead from Lullaby, hv Apremnnt from Hammock, by Orestbad a winning representative last month at AVilliamstown, Victoria, when her daughter. Dormouse, bv Bernard, comfortably won the Trial Handicap. Dormouse is owned by a .Melbourne sportsman, who races under the assumed name of Air F. A. Roul. She was bought as a yearling at the Randwick sales, and cost 140 guineas.

On Guineas Day at Newmarket, Balthazar (Roe Herode - Gravitation) ran second in the Mildenhn.il Plate, two miles, to the three-year-old Rackwav, in a field of ten. Balthazar is a halfbrother to the Trentliam-t rained Tractor

Tn Queensland thev race two-year-olds over much longer distances than is the custom in the Dominion. One of this age in Ladomond was runnerup in the Queensland Turf Club’s Royal Stakes nine furlongs, and it vas only the crack stayer Fairy Bob who beat him. while the Cup winner. Tip per an, finished behind him.

Biplane has done so well, and his legs look so clean, as a result of hiw spell, that Air T. Stilton is going to have him trained again, says, a Sydney writer. Tt is probable ho will return to Sydney next, month, and he will again he prepared by T. F. Scully. Racing men generally would like to see Biplane reward his owner with a win. At the. sale of Messrs Thompson's yearlings at, Jftandwick in the autumn of 1920 a bay colt by Buckwheat from the Royal Artillery mare Aurilaraina was bought by Air Erie Riddiford for 950 gs. The youngster in question, who is now known as "Wheat-field is er€*dited with having furnished extremely well, and he is ticked off to render a good account of himself at three rears old. Wheatfield, who forms one of the team under the charge of T. F. Quinlivan at Hastings, is extensively engaged. and, if he proves a first-rater, lie will have plenty of opportunities next season of displaying his powers. When the Victorian trainer, N. Seobio, left for England, the indentures of his apprentices, X. B. Stack and L. Carroll, were transferred, respectively, lo AT. T. M’Grath and L. C'arroil. Having commenced operations in England as a trainer, Scobie wants the boys to join him. and the committee of the Victoria Racing Club this month granted applications for the cancellation of their indentures to their present employers. and gave the boys clearances to enable them to be again apprenticed to Scobie when they arrive in England.
