No little amusement was created at tbe Lyttelton Magistrate’s Court this morning when Henri Jean Gnerzeder appeared before Mr W. T. Lester. J.P.. on a charge of drunkenness. Constable Hodgins, who conducted the case for the police, Stated that it was little use reading out the charge to the man. as he only spoke French. He asked the Clerk of the Court if he would ask’ the accused, in French, if he had been drunk. Efforts were made by the Clerk of the Court and two constables to ask the accused in French if he had been drunk, but the efforts wetQt in vain. Finally it occurred to Constable Hodgins to ask the accused, 1 ‘ Won* you drunk yesterday?” To this Guerzeder replied, “ Drunk y ester day alright,”' much to the bewilderment of the Court. He was convicted and discharged.
