A surgeon discovered a compound fracture of Carpentier's thumb, and a sprain of the hand, sufficient to render the hand useless. The injuries were caused in the second round, when Carpentier smashed Dempsey with his right bamd. The newspapers give credit to Carpentier for his gameness, but insist that it was a case of the “best big man against the best small man.” The latter could not overcome the handicap of weight, height and superior strength.
