WOMEN AND LETTERWRITING.

Letter-writing is an art, and it is one at which a great many women excel. But there are some girls who never seem to master its simplest forms, and whose shortest notes are dull and uninteresting. Such girls time and trouble, too, over their epistolary efforts, but all to no avail; the happy knack of e-pressing what they want to say in an attractive way does not seem to be theirs. Can it be cultivated ?

It can, if the girl is taken in hand young enough. Practice and helpful criticism will do more than anything else to improve her style, and reading and studying recognised writers are also beneficial. Of course, the ideal letter is not a studied effort—it is merely the spontaneous setting down of thoughts and events, and the more naturally this is done the more characteristic will it be of the writer.
