The largest country in which a proper census is made is India, which has about one-fifth of the world’s population. Here, although only onefifth of the heads of families can read or write, a very careful count is made, more than 1,000,000 enumerators being engaged for the purpose. At least 100,000 other officials instruct the enumerators and analyse tho census papers. It is a gigantic task to record 800,000,000 people’s names in a single night.
