The of apprentice allowanCC9 is likely to receive a good deal of attention from the delegates to tbo Racing Conferences next month, there l»emg several proposals on the order paper to amend the present Rules of Racing on this subject. There is a rule at present which makes it compulsory that at every meeting extending over two or more days the programme shall include at least one race in which only apprentice jockeys shall be eligible, to ride. The President will move to have this apply only to meetings held between September 1 and April 30. Presumably this is done to evefude the winter meetings, for which much can be said, but the exemption date should be made to start a good deal later than April 30. In the same i ole it is proposed to add a provision that “where the stipendiary steward shall certify that there arc not sufficient licensed apprentice jockeys present at the meeting who can and will ride, a jockey may be substituted and shall carry a penally of lUII *.' This plan has already been acted on this season and it is because it has worked well that it is now proposed to incorporate the idea into the rules. At present apprentices who have not ridden fiften winners are entitled to a 51b allowance in certain races. The Preside t proposes to amend the scale of allowances as follows: If he has not ridden ten winners, 71b; ten winners but not twenty. 51b ; twenty winners but not thirty. 31b. It is also suggested that these allowances should be available in handicap tint races of not more than £250 to the winner, in place of £l5O as is the present rule, a change that merely keeps pace with the increase ol stakes-. It is proposed to exempt two-

year-old races from this rule, as well as races in which apprentice jockeys only are eligible to vine. Another proposal mi tlie subject of apprentices is a new rule, to the effect that “ In all races ,n which apprentice jockeys only are .ligible to ride, any apprentice* jockey who inis not ridden a winner shall be permitted to claim an allowance of slb. /ml any apprentice jockey who has ridden ten winners or over shall carry a penalty of 51b.” There is also a proposal by the Canterbury Jockey Club that “ the conditions of a race for apprentice riders only may provide that apprentices who have Avon fifteen races or more shall carry a penalty of 71b.” All these suggestions are in the direction of giving further encouragement to young riders, a very laudable object, in view oi the scarcity of competent jockeys. The proposals recognise the need for something better than the present tlat allowance of 51b. which makes no y distinction between the youngster waving bis first ride and the lad who has had winning experience up to fourteen. This will be pro.vii.led for if the new rules are adopted ami the sliding scale that is suggested seems a very much better arrangement than the one now in force.

Acceptances for the Auckland Trolling Club’s meeting will dose at live o’clock to-morrow evening. Canterbury stables are strongly represented, and it is expected that a big contingent of horses from this quarter an ill make the trip north. The overhead conditions were pleas ant Avhile training operations we re in progress at Riccarton this morning. The number sovon grass track avhh open for fast work by horses engaged at the Rraeke.nfi.eld Huut Club meeting on Saturday, but it was decidedly slow. Hiero was out early and was sent over about live furlongs, the last halfmile occupying Cosee. Caverook sprinted half a mile in 54see, finishing up his task in good style. Macduff and Vic© Regal wore companions in a spin over live furlongs, whicn they reeled off in lmin 5 4-ssec. They finished together, with Macduff going comfortably. AYil! Prosper beat Some Kid in an attractive half-mile, run m 51 4-oscc, hut Some Kid was not ridden out. I.ink Up was going easily alongside Amendment after covering five furlongs in Lmin 5 3-ssec, a useful performance. Cambri'ii easily beat Mickey Free over six furlongs in lmin 19sec, the last five taking lmin 5 4-ssec. Demonstrate and Lord Ash lea ran fire furlongs nicely in lmin (> l-ssec, finishing together. Fire Rater and Hytem wore schooled over three of the steeplechase fences. Fire Eater, who was ridden by his owner, was responsible for a good exhibition of jumping, hut Hvtem blundered badly at the fence in front of the stand and .T. T. Humphries, his .rider, showed some cleverness in keeping the horse on his feet. T/tiff fT. L. Reid'' was schooled over the fences alone. He showed a disposition to shirk the fence in front of Ihe stand. Hi.* was. then taken round to the back and jumned three more ob. staeles in good style, with the pace on all tlic way. Orange Pip w as sent over the hurdles siiaping attractively.

Mazarna, with Orange Pip to giro him a lead, was given some jumping on Wednesday afternoon. After a trial at the big hurdles, where ho refused badly, lie was put into the jumping ring. Later he refused again at tbo schooling hurdle in front of the stand, but ho jumped the pony hurdles iu great style. Tt looks as if S. Trilford would havo to handle, the Kiug : s Guest golding very carefully before lie becomes n. proficient jumper. •I. J. Lewis has arrived at Riccarton from Ashburton, with Luff, Fire Eater and New Day, who are to race at the Bracken tie Id Hunt Club's meeting at Rangiora on Saturday. The well-known jockeys, Harold and Georgo Young, left this week for Sydney. The former will only make a f©AV weeks’ trip. but. George, will remain to ride Air G. D. Greenwood's horses in their Australian engagements. Powder ,Kmg), by ’King's Guest Gold Powder, was purchased by bin present, owner for 28gs. and sine© theu he has Avon three hurdlet*. The Dunedin Jockey Club intends 1 uingiug up a motion at the next Racing Conference Avith the object of having the Rules of Racing completely revised ; and, further, that legal assistance ‘bo obtained in the matter. The great disappointment of the Auckland meeting is said to be Oak* leigh, whose track work and schooling prior to the fixture led many to believe that he was sure to get. amongst the big money.

The official race book issued at tlie Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting was modelled on a proposed book presented for general adoption at the last Racing Conference. It is stated that if R. At an son could have remounted Coroglen at the first attempt alter falling in the Great -Northern Steeplechase lie would have won. Coroglen pulled ►way Avhen Manson attempted to regain the saddle. but he got there at the second attempt. Coroglen .finally finished eight lengths away from the AvinAt the annual meeting of the. Marton Jockey C lub it was reported that a start had been made with, the making, of the new course. The club is in the happy position of having pain off liabilities and haring about. £2OOO to start the necessary alterations ou the new course. The ancient Sir Solo is in active commission at Marion, and \V. Gar* reft has hopes of getting the Grand Xatioual Hurdles an inner of 1019 to the post at the Wellington Racing Club's winter meeting next mouth. A recent addition to 1.. Wilson's Hastings team is a rising two-year-old colt, by Absurd—Snooze (dam of Napper), leased bv tlie Douglas Trustees from Mr A. Symes. Among the proposals to be brought before the Racing Conference next mouth is one to the follow in ,v effect:- “ if any paid official bet at any meeting where be is officiating, he shall be liable to be fined not more than 50 son's and shall be disqualified by tlie stewards or committee.” The Avisdom of the new rule is so obvious that it is not likely to meet much opposition. The Dunedin Jockey Club has a notice of motion for the Racing Conference to reinstate the rules permitting the use of assumed names. The abolition of Ibis practice Avas agreed to last yea?-, and it is unlikely that the delegates, will agree to a return to the old custom, which has litLle to recommend it. Admyra has been put into Avork again at Wanganui. The daughter of Solferino appears to bo. quite sound, though suffering slightly from muscle sprcncss. Avhich seems to he. work in nr off. li she goes on all right she will be taken to Trcntham for the winter meeting, and then on to Riccarton for the Winter Cup. The Auckland sportsman. Mr K. W. Alison; jun.. has retained the services of the 'Wellington light-weight. C. Reed, to do the riding for his stable next seasonThe present year has been a. record one in New Zealand in regard to the number of sires imported from England. King John (by Roi ITcrodc). Traetor (by Tl.it' TctrarrTi), Paper Money (by Greenback), The Ace (by Rnvardo). and Cal mint (by .Spearmint) have already reached t3ic Dominion, •and .mother, Limond (by Desmond), nma ho expected to reach these shores in the space of a Tcav weeks. At Fleming! on on -Tune t Insurrection, ridden by W- Kitchener, finished fourtli, after getting a bad passage. On the second day lie had M . Duncan iil the middle, and started a good favourite but ho rail last in a fast-run race, tlie winner turning up in Adam Lindsay <>st *lb.. an bo put up a Avintor record of 2in in 342 see for a mile, and a half, after loading from start to finish.

HAWKE'S BAY NOTES. j (Special to the ‘‘Star.”) NAPIER, June 16. All Talk came a cropper Avhen doing a. gallop over the small sticks at Hastings yesterday and as a result he is Dot likely to bo" a starter at. the Napier Park meeting. Duke and Foemen are the popular picks for the Napier Steeplechase, and the pair are in good nick. Molyneux lias been doing a rot of solid Avork since his return from Otaki. and is thriving on it. If he misses a race at Napier Park or Hastings it will not be on account of want of condition. Taipairu and Warpath are iu work again. The pair, particularly the Jast named, havo built up a, lot during their short spell. Taipairu Avas always a solidly built filly, and she has even improved in that respect- As a. two-year-old, however, consistency has not been her strong point, and site may bo just as wayward as a three-year-old. Signyseian jumps big fences like an j old stager.
