OBITUARY.

H. C. GODFREY. Mr Henry Charles Godfrey, principal of the firm of H. C. Godfrey and Co., general merchants, Lichfield Street, died yesterday morning at his residence, Poynder Avenue, Fendalton. The late Mr Godfrey was horn in Marlborough in 1554. His father, the late Mr Henry Godfrey, arrived in New Zealand in the forties and was intimately associated with the early history of tins country. Mr H. C. Godfrey was educated at Christchurch and Nelson. For eight years he was employed by the firm of N. Edwards and Co. In 1881 he entered the service of Sclanders and Co., and was in charge of the grocery department of their business till 1894 In that year the firm retired from business in Christchurch and Mr Godfrey took over the grocery' department on his own account under the style of IT. C- Godfrey and Co. The deceased was married in 1880 to a daughter of Mr "VV- C. Hodgson, inspector of schools m Nelson. He leaves a widow and three sons, one of whom is Mr J. D. Godfrey, solicitor of Christchurch, and a daughter, Mrs N. Jones. JAMES D. CAMPBELL. The death took place last week at Southbridge, after a lingering illness, of a well-known and greatly respected resident or the Ellesmere district, in the person of Mr James T>. Campbell. The deceased resided in different parts of the district at various times, and up to about two years ago was farming at Lakeside. He was well-known as a contractor and carried out a great amount of work at various times for the North Rakaia River Board. The funeral, which took place on Friday, was attended by a large number of friends the interment taking place in the Presbyterian portion of the Ellesmere Public Cemetery. The service was conducted by the Rev T. G. Butler, of Southbridge.
