The Canterbury Automobile Association wrote to last night’s meeting of the Riccarton Borough Council stating that of late members of the association who attend tho Addington salevards on sale days had been prosecuted for leaving their cars unattended in Lowe Street. The association asked if it was possible for the council to agree to set aside a parking area where motorists could leave their cars and be protected against prosecution. The council received the request sympathetically, and it was resolved that the letter should be referred to the By-Laws Committee in order to give effect to it. There is now being shown in the window of Petersen’s Ltd., High Street, an article of interest, particularly to Christ’s College old boys. It is ithe original Corfu Cup, made by Petersen’s Ltd., and presented in 1872 by Mr C. C. Corfu for the old boys’ race. It is in the form of a tankard, and is completely covered by the names of the winners from the date of presentation. Many well known Canterbury names are here inscribed, the* first and second in the race being engraved each v ear. A very handsome stand for this cup is also on view. Jt is, like the cup, of solid silver, the design of the moulding being taken direct from old woodwork in Clifford’s Inn Room in tho Victoria and Albert Museum, London. With two names being engraved each year, it will bo 84 years before this stand is covered with the names of future l winners.

At the. Dominion Conference of the New Zealand Returned Soldiers’ Association at Dunedin, the question of the Canteen Fund was discussed, states tho

“ Otago Daily Times.” A remit from Canterbury was brought forward that it should bo a recommendation that the fund be used by the Government t.o provide a maternity bonus of £lO for the wives of returned soldiers. The discussion that followed provided one of the most 'humorous passages ?n the course of the conference, but the proposal was seriously made and seriously upheld, tho principal speaker being Mr Leadley, on behalf of tho Canterbury district, from whence the proposal emanated. It was defeated, however, its main opponents taking the ground that any experiment in a maternity bonus should come from the Government, and that such a use of the Canteen Fund would be most improper. Later a confidential report was Introduced by the Canteen Fund Committee, and this was taken up in committeeColonel T. W. M’Donald strongly urged open discussion, but reasons were advanced deciding the conference to remain in committee. The course of action suggested by the committee was agreed to, and the committee was empowered to draw up recommendations and follow the course of action suggested, members of the conference to respect tho confidential nature of the proposals in the meantime.
