LETTER TO CITY OOFNCIL. “The council’s attention is drawn to the fact that the ‘ Continental Bunday ’ is changing its character foi the better ” said the Sabbath Observance Committee ol the Christchurch Presbytery m a letter read at last evening’s meeting of the City Council. “In some of the most prosperous and progressive lands,” stated the committee, “the claims of the Lord’s Day are being increasingly recognised. In the sister dominion of Canada, for instance, the Lord's Day Act not only prohibits all Sunday entertainments which require an admission fee. but declares it illegal ‘ to do or employ any other person to do for gain any work, business or labour in connection therewith.’ On similar lines we ask you to prohibit the Sunday concerts now being held in this city, and, as far as it is in your power, all entertainments and meetings, disloyal, revolutionary, political, or otherwise out of keeping with the sacredness of our common Historic Rest Day.” On the motion of Councillor J. A. Flesher seconded by Councillor J. R. Brunt, the letter was referred to the By-laws Committee for consideration and report.
