Miss Sheen (Auckland) arrived in Christchurch this morning, and is staying at the Clarendon. Tlr ami Mrs L. Seholes (Mangaroa, Wellington) went south to-day after spending a. few days in Christchurch. Miss Guthrie (Invercargill) arrived in Christchurch last evening from the north, and is staying at Warner’s. Miss Esrae North (Pahiatua) intends going to England to study at Bedford College for Women, and later sho will study on tench in Franco. Mr and Mrs .T. R. Henderson (Sydney) arrived in Christchurch to-day on ji holidav visit, and are staving* at Warner’s Mrs Vestey. Miss Vesty and Miss Rockett, all of Sydney, have returned from Dunedin, and to-day left for Wellington and Picton. Mr and Mrs J • G. L. Vernon and her children .’eft to-day for Racecourse Hill, whore they will stay with Mr and Mrs Knight. Mr and Mrs Geoffer.v Denmstmi will leave Christchurch this evening on a visit to Sir Francis and Lady 8011, Wellington. Miss Barbara. Gould and Miss Rita. Gibson have returned to Christchurch after a visit to Mrs Roger Gould, Rotherham. Mrs J. H. Flail, Papanui, accompanied by Miss Jenkins (Australia), has gone to Dunedin to stay with Mrs W. A. Moore, Mornington. Tli Francis and Mrs Fitch (New ) ork), who have been in Christchurch for several days, left last evening for Wellington. On Monday evening a number of Miss Winifred Philpotfs friends tendered her a kitchen shower at her homo in Slater Street. Miss Philpottu is to bo married shortly. An interesting visitor io Christchurch at present is Miss Katherine Hughes, of Montreal, Canada, who is in New Zealand on a pleasure trip. Mbs Hughes is_ vice-president of the Canadian Women’s Press Club in Edmonton, and a writer of distinction. For three years, from 1913 to 1916, she was assistant to the Agent-General for Alberta in London, hut resigned that post to resume writing.

A most enjoyable house dance was given on Saturday evening by the members of the Girls;’ Friendly Society Hostel. Dancing took place in the largo dining-room, which was decorated with chry-anthc.mmns and .autumn leaves. The chaperones were Miss Baker, tho Matron, and Mrs WagstafT. The committee who arranged tho dance were tho Misses Butteriek, Clarke, Fcrrier, Wright and Russell. The. dance given last evening by Christchurch members of St Hilda's College Old Girls’ Association was organised with the object of raising money towards wiping off the debt on a cottage given by the association to the Sisters of St Hilda’s College. The sum of .-£‘26 was the financial result of last night’s dance. This is most gratifying to tho energetic committee.
