CENSUS RETURNS.
ASHBURTON. The census return of the population of the Borough of Ashburton (excluding Hampstead) sets down the total at 3413 —1590 males and 1823 females—compared with 2808 at the 1916 census. Tho increase is therefore 605 but since 1916 the district of Netherby joined the borough, adding about 300 souls, so that the net increase would be about 305- Hampstead has also been part of tho borough since April 1 last but its population (1412) was shown separately. The total for the Ashburton borough is therefore 4825, an increase of 2017 which is largely accounted for by the union with Netherby and Hampstead. The population of these combined districts in 1916 was 4387 so that the natural increase has been 438, or 10 per cent. Adding the suburban districts of Allenton and Tinwald not yet included in the borough, the total population within a two-mile radius of the post office is not less than 7000..
