IRISH PROBLEM.

ATTITUDE OF THE VATICAN ARCHBISHOP MANNIX’S view. By Telegraph—Press Association—-Copyright. Australian and N.Z Cable Association LONDON, April 18. Archbishop Mannix has arrived in London. Interviewed by a prominent London Sinn Fein leader regarding the alleged statement by Cardinal Doglierty, of Philadelphia, to tho effect that Archbishop Mannix, while at Pome advocated a settlement between Ireland and England on terms more moderate than those of the Irish Republicans, Archbishop Mannix says he is confident that Cardinal Dqgherty did not make the statement, which is a pure invention, and probably clumsy English propaganda. “I cannot say what the attitude of the Vatican on the Irish question is ” said Archbishop Mannix, “but the English politicians who base hopes of crushing Ireland upon the Vatican are doomed to disappointment. The Vatican will not take sides against the declared will of the Irish people. The policy of Dominion Home Rule was never offered on England’s side or accepted on Ireland’s.” Archbishop Mannix expects to sail for Australia about the middle of May.
