The syllabus during the year had included a mock meeting of shareholders if a company, a number of educational lectures, a. debate, and a social evening in tho Cadcna tea rooms. An essay competition for which prizes were donated bMessrs It. T. Tosswill and K L. Hicks, was won by Mr D. V. G. Smith 1. Mr F. -f Traynor 2, Mr F. X. Lawrence 8. The society was represented in the annual debate with the "Wellington Accountant Students’ Society by Messrs S. J. Hearn, F. X. Lawrence, D. Y. G. Smith and J. M. Jenkins, which team defeated 'Wellington by 33 6 points to 30S points. Tlie examination for students v,*lxo had not passed the intermediate examination, organised by Mr Whittin eh am. who also donated the first prize of £5 ss, was won by Mr S. H. Truman, while Mr H. A. C. North, second, secured the prize of a valuable collection of books by ill© “ Accounting and Commerce,” WellingMr ,1. Morrison, speaking of the report, warmly congratulated.. the debating team, on their victory over Wellington. He had been surprised at the improvement which had been made in the speakers between tho preliminary effort in Christchurch and tho big test in Wellington. He also explained the system under which the grants from the New Zealand Societj’ of Accountants and the New Zealand Institute of Accountants had been made, and he assured the society that both institutions realised that the students’ societios were the. basis from which the fuure members of the profession were to be drawn. The following officers were elected for the doining rear:—President. Mr J. S. Lav; vice-presidents, Messrs R. f>ymes. H. R. Best. R. T. Tosswill, R. F. Sutherland and C. Buchanan; honorary treasurer, Mr A. L. Nic son; honorary adxtor. Mr C. H. Christie; honorary secretary. Mr T 5. ,f M’Laren; committee. Miss Baker. Mrs L. J. Buchanan, Messrs F. X. Lawrence. D. V. G. Smith. J. M. Jenkins, E. G. Thomas and S. J. Hearn. The secretary reported that Mr H. S. Cordery, at present in Samoa, had donated a prize of .Gf Is to the student showing the most promise in the next inter-society debate against Wellington. It was decided 'that the society should invite the Lunedin Commerce Faculty to meet in debate some time in June. The chairman announced that Mr W. E. Best-had offered a shield to be competed for in the inter-society debates with Wellington. It was decided that tlie thanks of the society should be conveyed to Mr Best, and that Mr Best be asked to frame the conditions for the competition, with the desire of tho society, also, that it should bear the donor's name and be known as the “ Best Shield.” It was announced that Mr H. T. Wliittingha.ni had again donated a prize of £5 os and would conduct an examination on the eame lines as that of last year. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr R. Symes, the retiring president. The chairman then called upon the incoming president. Mr Day, to address the members, and a vote of thanks to the chair man closed the meeting.
