DEATH NICHOLAS.

The death is announced of Nicholas, ex-King of Montenegro, in his eightieth year. (Petrovich Nyegosli, Nicholas 1., of Montenegro, was born on October 7, 1841, and was educated at Trieste and Paris. He was proclaimed Prince of Montenegro, as successor to his uncle, on August 14, 1860. He assumed the title of King in virtue of a resolution passed unanimously by the National Skupshtina, on August 28, 1910, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of his accession- He was married on November 8, 1800. to Milena Petrovna Vukotitcli, daughter of Senator Peter Vukotitch, Vice-President of the Council of State. There were nine children of the marriage, the third daughter, Princess Stana, being married in 1907 to the Russian Grand Duke Nicholas, and the fifth, Princess Helena, born in 1873, being married: in 1890 to King V ictor Emanuel of Italy. Montenegro took part in the war on the side of the Allied Powers, and the aged King Nicholas shared many of the hardships of his troops in the struggle against Austria. After the armistice the Serbians ordered elections for a National Assembly, which, on November 25, 1918. declared itself in favour of the deposition of King Nicholas and the dynasty, and on November 2G it voted for the union of Montenegro with the Jugo-Slav State of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. Since liis deposition King Nicholas had been living in France.)
