has been the backbone of the league iu Christchurch, was evidenced by the large attendance of members, who were unanimous in their expressions of good will. Mrs Deans. Airs Carey-Hill. and j members of the committee received the j guests, who wandered over the lawns ‘ and garden paths. Tea was set on i small tables ben eat li shady trees, a j number of girl members of the league serving tea. The opportunity was | taken of presenting;’ to Mrs Carey-Hill, | a suede travelling cushion. Air Carey- ! Hill also receiving one. This was done i by her Excellency Lady Jellicoe, after j Mrs Bean had made a speech of fare- j well on behalf of the committee and members of the league. The eulogistic remaiks made by Mrs Bean in reference to the excellent work done by the honorary secretary, Mrs CareyHill, were echoed by everyone. In the course of her speech Airs Bean said that Airs 'Carey-Hill had been the energetic and able secretary so long that members did not know what they would do during her absence. However, they would do their best. She said that the work done by Airs CareyHill during the war was considerably more than was realised here, but that it had been appreciated abroad—in England, in France, and in Egypthad been shown by the various letters received from secretaries and heads of military and other societies. The aim of the Victoria League, Airs Bean went on to sav, was to keep New Zealand, and other overseas Dominions, in touch with ihe AI other Country, and lo strengthen the bond between them. The travelling cushions were then presented by her Excellency to Air and Mrs Carey-Hill, Lady Jellicoe personally wishing them a happy trip. Quite unexpectedly, but very aptly. Lord Jellicoe added a few words expressing tho pleasure felt by her Excellency in being asked to perform the task of presenting the gifts- He also said that it gave both Lady Jellicoe and himself great pleasure to meet so many members of the league, the object of which was very necessary. In conclusion lie wished Mr and Airs CareyHill a pleasant holiday, and a, safe return. Airs Carey-Hill most charmingly replied. She likened the league to a favourite child that she was leaving behind for someone else to bring up. “So please bring it up nicely,” she added naivelv.
