CORRESPONDENCE.

THE AVON. TO THE EDITOR. i Sir, —It would be spkuidid if the I Christchurch regatta could be held on | the Avon, and really there is no reason why it should not, if, when improvement work is undertaken, it is made a complete job, and not a patchwork affair. One can allow one’s imagination to stray into tho future and see gay throngs on well kerpt lawns, stand accommodation, no postponements owing to rough water, and no delay in getting off events. A Henley-on-Avon. I venture to say. would be tho great rowing event of the Dominion. The “ has-beens ” might rnil against beatracing, but at. the world’s greatest amateur rowing carnival—Henley-on-Thames—the races an* rowed in heats. Ift is the highest ambition the world over to- win at Henley. The Diamond Sculls there is of higgler value in their eyes than the Olympic Sculls, for it takes a lot more winning. A course on the Avon could very easily be made sufficient to aecomimklate three boats, and a course should be part of any scheme of improvement that is presented. What purports to be a Christchurch regatta lias been hold for something like half a century, but the nearest course to Christchurch has been at the estuary—and. what a course it is! Tho last experience sickened the | local committee. Other places have i been tried and abandoned, and this year j the Focal committee has been compelled to go back to L s ke Forsyth. The j Christchurch regatta should be held on the Avon, and eventually it will be.— 1 am, etc., BLUE AND WHITE. MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. TO 7HE EDITOR. Sir, —A scrutiny of candidates selected by tho L.81.C. is profoundly disappointing. Leaving out Messrs Armstrong, Sullivatn, Hunter and Langley, the team is wiaak and will not appeal to those citizens who are disposed to support the candidature of Labour nominees who possess some fitness for the position. It may be asserted that at no previous juncture lias it been so necessary as now that the* City Council should be composed of men of sound business instincts who will pilot the city through its financial difficulties and responsibilities. Obviously there is a splendid opportunity fur several young and capable men to display a spirit of civic patriotism and place their services at the disposal of the city. There is a growing sentiment that’ the claims of Citizens’ and Labour Associations as such should be discarded and that we should have a good sprinkling of councillors who would be free to act on independent # convictions. Fortunately there is still time for something to be done in the direction suggested, and it only requires energetic action on the pari- of a few enthusiasts to secure the desired result.—l am, etc-. RATEPAYER. CRICKET. TO T7TTS EDITOR. Sir, —The defeat of Canterbury by Otago should provide the conclusive evidence that our cricket is sadly in need of a shake up. Canterbury has been roundly beaten this season by Auckland, Wellington and Otago, and lias dropped sadly from its proud position of a few years ago. Ib is no use indulging in reproaches. Helpful suggestions are wanted. Let our Cricket Association consider the position, and make some proposals. I mu.sure the public will find the mc/ney, if they feel as I do about it.—l nan, etc-, WILLING TO GTYE.
