IMPROVING THE AVON.
INQUIRY REGARDING DISCHARGE OF SEWAGE At last night’s meeting of the Drainale Board. Air H. Langford, reportingon Saturday s inspection of the lower Avon, said that the river below the budge was more or less dammed up bv silt, and was very shallow at low water He had pointed out that the Borough Council and other bodies would find the board in sympathy with anything ior the improvement of the* river, subject to tho limitation of the board’s powers as a drainage board only. The opinion seemed to lie* that tho control of the river from mouth to source would have to be vested in some body yet. to be brought into existence. Several of those at the conference Eta ted that drainage was being improperly .allowed to enter the river, especially near the mouth, and lm thought Unit, a report Imm the board’s officers should be prepared on the point, arid that steps should bo taken to stop the entry of sewage into tho river. The New Brighton Borough. Oouncil meanwhile was tabulating all possible information regarding the riverThe chairman (Mr Walter Hill) said that the charge was that the board was discharging crude sewage into the I Lie acting-secretary (Mr Champion) Laid that on January 29 the valve was* opened during heavy ruin and tho tanks were accidentally Hooded, and there wa s no option but to ru,j the Sew age out. On Friday last the valve was open for two hours. It was resolved to obtain, a report from the Works Committee on the subject.
