Durham Street West, Auckland R<iin started just before the evenicg meeting held by the Old Boys' Athledac Club at Lancaster Perk last Tuesday, but despite the very unpleasant conditions there was a fair number of starters in the two events, and bot-b racee provided good sport A 7o yards handicap, a distance which was held ter the first time tbi= seasoo. was marked by the first appearance of the Canterbury champion sprinter, J H. .Parker. Bote heats and the final provided good runs. Itee winner turned up in that persistent tryer, V. J. Batstone (6£yds). Batstone has been training hard ail the season and is now in good trim. C- Peulingtoci (4ydsi was a close second. This runner has only been in training for a. few- week* and should pick up one or two races before the season closes. Another persistent trainer in J B. Howard (Byds) van third. .Howard has taken part in very few* races though he started training at the beginning of the season. He would be well advised to enter each' week, even if he does not always gain a place- J. H. Parker found the distance too short. He to be in fairly good form and might put up good performances on February 19. C. H. Taylor (scr) had another rather easy vietpy in tine 440 yards handicapBlack (20yds) ran very w ell ftre second place. He appeared for the first- time >n a race this season, and, with training. might, have one or two wins Taylor has had several easy wins? this season and could give awuy bigger starts in the quarter. All roads next Saturday lead to caster Park, where the Canterbury amateur athletic, championships 101 l WB decided- The fields are not quite so large ns last year, but practically all the best of the legal athletes willy be engaged, besides others from outside, including Wilson, the Olympic hurdler. The clubs are generallv stronger all round, particularly with regard to Canterbury College, who should adn&x niiite a goodly total of points. The C.A.A.0.. with C. H Taylor as their star performer, should be m a leading position by the end of the day. though it is quit© on the cards that Old Bov? will run them closeThe springs will provide splendid running. as Parker. Walden, Rule (Otegc University). Penlingt-on. Garrick and Richardson (Wellington) are all fairly even. Taylor has a mortgage on the middle distances, arid should be followed home by Ford and Page. The beet race of the day will probably be the three miles, in which Lang (Of<3 Boys), Page (Canterbury College) and Hill (Dunedin) should be the elect. The two first named are very evenly matched. and the last- lap should provide a great battle. Engaged in the walk are Stewart (Old Bovs), the present champion. Barnett. and A. W. Page (Canterbury Col-, lege) and Alley (JI.fLS.). This is hard to pick. Popular fancy awards first place to Canterbury College. % The hurdles will be full of interest, for should Wilson go to the mark there is every prospect of fast time being put up. Of the local men Carrick is the most proficient in the straight leg style, and he is fairly fast on the flat. Trv the field eve.Qts there are some sound performers in M’T.eod. Oowlishaw, Batstone, Parker and Low. The Auckland Domain must he in great order just now if tho times put up a t‘the athletic meeting of the Publ»o Service Amateur Athletic Club are any criterion. In the 220yd<* Davidson, the Olympic runner, frem the scratch maj-k, was timed by two watches to run the distance in 21sec. Plummer. 17yds. led from the start right up to the tape, where he was beaten by th e champion, who came up like a whirlwind. There was a. light following wind, but still the T>erforTnan*-e is remarkable. B. Davidson (13yds). a brother of the champion, finished third. The mile test saw Webber (A katana, and Fnivexsity) win comfortably frem neddon TPublic Prince) in 4min 49 4—ssec- Webber is the preeect distance champion of the universities and is a fine runner. The 100yds was won by a young run' ner in W. L. Elliot, who registered 10 2- sec from scratchAt the championships of the New Zealand universities, to be held in Christchurch- at Lancaster Park, on Easter Monday, there are three open events, 75. 220 and SSOyd&. included in the programme. These races .--hould drew splendid fields. The two events decided last week at Lancastei Park, under the auspice? of the Old Boys’ Club, were rather spoilt by the shower which commenced to faR just at the time of starting. Parker fame down from bis farm a< Rangiora. to compete, but was not in the beet of training and failed to get a place in the 70vds f rom the half-yard mark Walden and C. Penlington ran well, the former finishing second from ths 4yds majk in 7 4-ssec. What would have been a groat fieid in the quarter was spoilt by the rain, and dwindled down to half the original number. Black, 20yds (Canterbury College), ran strongly to the entrance of the straight, when he was caught b*the champion. Taylor- who won with consummate <>ase. pulling up. in 52 3- Taylor, by nis running of late, impresses one as being worthy of a place amongst the greatest champions of the iiast. and it te to be hoped that this fine runner will go for results while his form is so good.
