UNIVERSITY SENATE.

UNIVERSITY GRANTS. fpKR. Prkss Association.] WELLINGTON, January 20. At the University Senate a motion, by Professor Hunter, that without tho approval of Senate no affiliated institution should hold term examinations in a. district other than its own, was lost. A letter was read from Mrs Christie, widow of the late Dr Christie, who was first to obtain the university degree of Bachelor of Medicine, offering £1(X), the interest mi which to provide a yearly medical prize, and suggesting anatomy as a subject. The Senate accepted with thanks. Professor Macmillan Brown moved that n committee be appointed to cxsunine into tho working of the Workers’ Educational Association in the various centres, and the application of the grant. that the Senate administers. Mr Brown said the Senato did not appear to fully realise its responsibility for tho administration of the finances of the Workers’ Educational Association. The Senate did not rid itself of responsibility by handing over the administration to University Colleges. Certain rules should be laid down for the qualification of tutors. He thought they ought to see that the teaching was genuine, and not propaganda.

Mr Von Haast seconded the motion. Professor Hunter moved an amendment that a committee be appointed to examine into the use which colleges are making of tho grants made by the University to colleges out of the Endowment Fund. Professor Macmillan Brown said ho was willing to accept the amendment. He pointed out that all he alleged against the W.E.A. was the appointment of one tutor in Canterbury. The statements made had done tho whole movement a great harm. There was no criticism about the Victoria College branch of the work with twenty-three classes in the district. Auckland had a large number of classes, arid so had Otago. The Work done in New Zealand

was referred to with approval by the English W.E.A. Sir R. Stout said that he would adhere to his printed statement. He would not withdraw one word.

Professor M’Mi Han Brown also replied, and the motion, as amended by Professor Hunter, was carried unanimous! v.
