WOMEN WHO ARE TOO GOOD.
There are people whose virtues are j more, unpleasant than their vices, and ; among them .1 rank a certain type of j unselfish woman. The woman £ mean is always oyer- j doing it. She. is aggressively unselfish. : It is her hobby, her life work. She is always looking out for opportunities for j displaying her talent and has a perfect passion for immolating herself on the altar for another’s sake. Indeed she is quite angry yitii you if you will not permit her to sacrifice herself on your behalf or if you point out to her that the cause or person for whom. s!»r is exhibiting so much heroism is quite unworthy and undeserving. T know a woman who simply cannot resist any appeal to her. She is surrounded by n whole host of parasites who trade upon her generosity and : amiable weakness. “ I do so lore to feci that all my friends come to me in their times of j trouble.” she says. And they do so with a vengeance. The dear woman does not realise that i there is nothing mutual about her | friendships. Not strong physically her- I self, she will make herself ill nursing a sick ** friend.” who will not come near ber in her illness. Tf there is anything particularly unpleasant to- he. done sbe is railed upon to do it. All the little irksome things which others are too lazy to do for themselves are performed by her. Nor does ber stop at. personal service. She will give away things that Mie has no right to part with and will “fend” sums of money beyond her means simply because she cannot bear to refuse. Unselfishness carried to extremes loses its nobility- It becomes, indeed, the greatest form of selfishness. It is a. kind of perverted vanitv.—By Alfred Edye in the 1 ‘ Daily Mail.”
