Today’s river report states that both branches of the Waimakariri and the ttakaia are clear; the Opihi and Waitaki are fishable. Mr E. A Vail, of Christchurch, has been appointed pole foreman to the Southland Power Board, and Mr L. A. Kirby, of Christchurch, line foreman. Mr L. C. Yicary, of the Christchurch City Council s electricity department, has been appointed electrical engineer to tho Borough of Stratford. The Hon W. Nosworthy has telegraphed _to the Mayor that he will arrive in Christchurch on the evening of January 18, and leave again for Wellington on January 20. Mr W. W. Charters, of Messrs Kinsey and Co.j who has been acting as delegate at a conference of the New Zealand Shipping Clerks’ Guild at Wellington, returned to Christchurch this morning. Unless citizens cease using water for gardening purposes, it may be necessary to shut down the mams in the residential area. A warning to this effect has been issued by the Water Supply Committee. While visiting Lake Coleridge yesterday for the purpose of arranging for the Ministerial visit at the end of January, Mr Climie found that work on the third pipe line was .well advanced,# while the contract for the fourth pipe line was to be let this month, and there was every indication that the Government intended to complete the fourth line at the earliest ixjsrible moment. Meanwhile, it was hoped that the third pipe line would be finished by June. Mr Climie made arrangements for direction signs, and for the supply of hot water and milTc to those who make the trip. It is hoped that as many persons as possible will join in the inspection, and an onen invitation is issued to car owners either to place their cars at the disposal of the league or to take as many friends as possible on the trip, which will occupy a day.
