EVENTS OF THE WEEK. [From Our Correspondent.j THE HOLIDAYS. With the fine weather experienced it was on 1.7 to be expected that record crowds would visit the seaside. Record business was done in all departments. The food shops were practically eaten bare on Monday, and on that day the surf was literally black with bathers. Burnt faces and bodies wore the chief complaint encountered for the balance of the week. “New chums’’ always have to have this experience before they realise the folly of exposing themselves to unaccustomed heat, Mr Bishop 3nd his Boy Scouts are reported “ all well,” and are as “fit as fiddles.” They are at Okain’s Bay to-day, and have had a good time tliore fishing. Mr Bishop expects to reach Akaroa on Monday. GALA. A well-attended progress meeting of the committee was held in the Council Chambers on Tuesday night when all the various arrangements were leported to be well in hand It was decided that a treasure hunt should be added to the programme of events. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs C. A. Myhre and family are spending the holidays at the Pleasant Point Domain. Mr and Airs C. H. Agar and family, of Lyttelton, are at present staying at New Brighton. Mr Stewart Morton, of ’Wellington, has been staying with Air G. L. Cull, Victoria Street. MINIATURE RIFLE CLUB. Captain A. W. Owles has again demonstrated his interest in the affairs of the borough, by the presentation to the club of a very handsome silver championship cup for annual competition by members of the club. BAND. On Wednesday evening an attractive programme of music was played in the rotunda, and was much enjoyed by a .arge and appreciative audience. BOWLING. The bowling green has been well patronised during the week. On Saturday and Monday last several progressive doubles were played. The following are some of the results of the week’s play:— Championship doubles—W. Barnett and S. Barnett beat Besley and Ainger. Championship singles—Beatty beat Drake, Pat trick beat Sanders. Colts’ singles—Taylor beat Randel. A rink, consisting of S. Barnett, F. Muirson, F. Barnett and J. Ainger, leave to-day for Wellington, to compete in the Dominion tournament.

NORTH BEACH NOTES. [From Our Correspondent. Q North Beach has had a record number of visitors during the past week. Gala day was a red letter day, and the committee is jubilant ov.er the success. Owing to the races, it was impossible for the tramway to cope with the traffic during the forenoon, and many were the disappointments along but during the afternoon the trams simply poured their loads of passengers

into North Beach, and by three o'clock the foreshore was alive with people, an apparently happy m the enjoyment ot the beautiful weather and the many iorm.s of amusement provided. At seven o’clock the crowd started to gather around tne Surf Club pavilion, in expectation of the announcement m connection with tko “mysterious man.” in the absence of the Mayor, Councdlor heaver opened the sealed envelope containing the correct name ol “ .Mr Soanso,” and at the same time introduced the man, Mr Louis Cuming, to the vast crowd. Mr Cuming was at JNorth Beach all clay, mixed with the crowd, but was not once challenged. The ticket-holders then filed through the building, the following being cm* lucky recipients of notes :—Misses K. Bedaington, Lives ay, V. Anderson, Bropiiy, H. Bradshaw, M. Bradshaw, Abel, Brodie, Appleyard, 1). Gott, jVI Hall, Mesdames W. I>. Fuller, K. Bailey, Clark, Be la Cour, Messrs K. C. Hams, 11. Vincent, W. Balkind, W. t'eppler, W. A. Barnes, K. Snell, JH. Kowse, O. Spicer, H. L. Vincent, C. Tregonning, R. Smith, L. Snell, L. Rae, M. Giay, J. Price. Mrs R. Leckie also won £l, but generously handed it back to the gala funds. The Queen’s Pictures prize was won by Miss .It. Foster, the Brighton Pictures by Miss Mary Smith, and the lady’s handbag was won. by Miss G. Brown. Seann Tnubhais—Boris Bell 1, J. Irvine 2, i. Bell 3. The Borough Council lias secured a quantity of cement, which will enable the contractor to proceed with the channelling of Berry Street extension. A meeting of the Gala Committee is advertised for Thursday evening uext.
