THE FIRST TEST.
The decisive defeat inflicted on tho English cricket team in the first test match will grievously disappoint the British public. That disappointment will ho shared to some extent by. all true followers of tho game, oven in tho Antipodes. The margin of tho Australian victory is so heavy that ono is at a loss in accounting for the poor performance of an admittedly strong English team. The team is a strong one, beyond a doubt, and that it is capable of better things we firmly believe. Tlie experience gained should be valuable to both sides, and the nest test should provide a more convincing trial of strength. It will be surprising indeed if furthir trials reveal that the result of the first test indicates the real difference in the calibre of the teams. In the meantime the Australian eleven are entitled to the hearty congratulations duo to the winners. Their performance was an outstanding one, which made test match history.
