LOCAL AND GENERAL.

riio irregularity of school holidays and its hearing on the expiry of school-children’s tram tickets was mentioned in the Tramway Board yesterday hy Mr H. Pearce, who said that in some casos the children only got a quarter of tlic value. of their tickets because school holidays occurred and made them useless. The matter was referred to a committee for a report. A duplication of house numbers in Ferry Road seems certain as the result of divided control. Under the City Council’s scheme, tho road has been numbered from Madras Street out to the city boundary. Last evening tho Woolston Borough Council decided to bring in a numbering scheme of its own starting afresh from “one.” It is suggested that from High Street to Aidwin’s Road shall bn known as “Ferry Road, Christchurch.” and from Aidwin’s Road to the Heathcoto Bridge as “Ferry Road, Woolston.” Severe condemnation of the Government's action in arranging for immigrants without making adequate housing provision was uttered at tho last meeting of the Canterbury Labour Representation Committee. Letters were received from persons evicted or threatened with exiction from houses, and sonic of the delegates stated that many houses in and about the city were empty, the owners refusing to let them, and holding them for sale. After a long discussion, it was decided to.hold, with tho co-operation of the Canterbury _ Trades and Labour Council, a meeting of rentpayors, to form a, RentpayCrs Protection Society. The eleventh annual West Coast Competitions Festival just concluded at Greymouth drew between six and seven hundred entries. The oratory, debating, elementary and musical (both vocal and instrumental) sections kept the. judges busy, frequently from 9 a.m. till midnight; yet large interested audiences remained -throughout to hear the decisions. Tho sole judges (Mr and Airs Farqulpar Young) appear to have given great satisfaction. They wore the recipients of a civic, greeting and farewell. Tho Mayor, Mr J. D. Lynch, presented a solid silver cup for oratory (to mark his striking a rich seam of coal in the Dobson mine), and this with four other silver cups and numerous gold championship medals shows how seriously_ the “Coasters” take these competitions. In tho Oddfellows’ Hall, St Asaph Street, last evening, a roll of honour was, unveiled to commemorate the sev-enty-four members of the Loyal City of Christchurch Lodge, No. 4(302, AL U., 1.0.0. F., who served in tho Great War. The roll of honour is a handsome piece of work, being constructed of mottled kauri, with tho names of the lodge members who served inscribed in gold' fettering. Tho unveiling ceremony was carried out by Brother L. P. Longuet, who gave an eloquent address to the large gathering present. (The lodge record is as follows Voluntarily enlisted, in New Zealand 43, in Australia 1, in Canada 1, in England 1, total 4(5; drawn ,iu ballot in Nov; Zealand and went on service, 28, making a grand total of 74. Five members of the lodge left New Zealand with the Alain Body, one left Australia with tho Australian Alain Body, and ono left Canada, with the Canadian Alain Body. 1* ifty-six of the seventy-four went overseas from New Zealand. Four were in Egypt and took part in the defence of Suez Canal when attacked by tho Turks. Some fought on throe continents—Europe. Asia and Africa. One served with tho wireless corps in Alesopotapiia for two years, and one on H.AI.S. Victorious in the North Sea. One was a prisoner of war in Germanv for two years and a half. Ono died of fever in Egypt, one was killed at tho landing on Gallipoli, whilst seven others made the supreme sacrifice in Franco. Ton of the seventy-four wore seriously and five slightly wounded. One is still in Hanmer Military hospital suffering from the effects of service in Africa, and one is still under hospital treatment from the effects of amputation of a limb. A brief homily on Sabbath ohservanco was given by Sir H. Holland to the members of the Canterbury Head Centre of the Royal Life-Saving Society at tho centre’s annual meeting last evening. When it was moved that Air Holland should bp reappointed a vice-president of the society he stated that lie felt that be must decline nomination as a matter of principle. He had wished to resign some time, ago, on account of certain events which took place at Taylor’s Mistake at the New Year., Although there were three public holidays immediately before and three immediately after, the society had held shield competitions on a Sunday. That did not fit in with his ideas of Sabbath observance. Ho could not see his way to countenance sports or carnivals on Sunday, although he would be tho last to object to live-saving or even life-saving practice on Sundays. When on a visit Homo he had seen the effects of the Continental Sunday, and was very jealous in the interests of working men and women that it should not bo introduced hero. Mr K. Bassett said that the meeting referred to had not been held by the centre, bub by surf clubs. No doubt the members of surf clubs present would endeavour to prevent a recurrence. Air G. Bilson supported Mr Holland, stating that it should be made clear that the competition was conducted by surf clubs and not by tho Life-Saving Association. Mr A. Barrett said that Taylor’s Mistake was practically isolated and could not hold its meetings on Saturday. The Taylqr’s Alistakc club had beon formed on a Sunday, and ab its work was done on Sunday. If the centre tried to dictate to the club it would resign straight away. There was no further discussion, and Mr Holland was reappointed a vice-president, accepting the explanation that the centre had nothing to do with the meeting complained of.
