WAR MEMORIAL DESIGNS.

EXHIBITED LOCALLY* The' titter inadequacy of the Christchurch war memorial proposals is suggested by a, study of the memorial designs' in the City Council Chamber. These designs bring into focus some of the world’s great memorials, and lead one to reflect that what other cities have done in memory of individuals or of comparatively minor events should not outdo iu grandeur tho memorials of the Croat War. Memorials of all kinds are (illustrated in the exhibition at the Council Chamber. Tablets to individuals or groups of soldiers are numerous. The designs of larger city memorials include some exquisite Workmanship. Groups of statuary are also included iu tho collection. There arc sonic beautiful rolls of honour. Photographs and sketches of the Cenotaph in London are an impressive feature of the exhibition. A design for the decoration of a school hall arrests tho eye. On either side of a huge window arc scenes illustrative of llupcrt Brooke’s lines: “If I should die, think only this of me, that there’s some corner of a. foreign field that is forever England.” Tho drawing of some of the nude figures of boys at their school sports is dreadful, but the grouping and general idea are both good. A map of the proposed reconstruction of the central portion of the city of Westminster gives an idea of tho breadth of vision of many of those who have handled the /war memorial question. The exhibition should he invaluable to all' who desire to express their recognition of those who fell in the war.
