MUCH CONTROVERSY, STATEMENT BY MR LLOYD GEORGE. Cy Telegraph—Prw* Association—Copyright. Australian und N.Z, Cable Association, (Received September 20, 9 a.m.) LONDON. September 18. Ernest Bevm, of the Dockers' Union. Mid a director of the “ Daily Herald,” lias written to Mr l.lovd George, protesting against, the official statement that the ‘‘Herald” would not have taken the public into its confidence regarding the proposed Bolshevik subsidy had it not known that the secret could no longer he kept. This .statement Mr Berm regards as a reflection unon, the four trade unions and the officials who a.ro directors of the “ Herald." Mr Lloyd George, in replying, recapitulates the damaging disclosure already made concerning dho negotiations, and concludes: “It appears inconceivable that the directors who are really exercising business control over a concern of which they are trustees for trade unions, should'not have been acquainted with what was -going on. If they were ignorant of such vital matters it is a. sinister commentary on the control exercised by the trad© union representatives over this organ,” Mr Bevin, replying, charged Mr Lloyd George with side-tracking the issue with his usual ability, not making his charges definite or explicit. Mr Bevm reiterates that the directors de(jmed the ‘offer as soon as it camo to their knowledge.
