The petition presented to the Borough Council 011 Monday last, asking tiiat tiio loan recently sanctioned by the ratepayers be abandoned, was promptly dealt with, the council unanimously deciding that the request should receive no coiisideiration. Tiio procedure adopted by the petitioners was a most, unusual one. The Mayor and councillors addressed public meetings before the- date of the loan poll in all parts of the borough, and every opportunity was given lor criticism and objection. At each meeting practically unanimous resolutions were carried in favour ol the loan proposals* and -tho loan was carried at a poll by a majority of sixty-live. Mr H. Hueks, of the Ozono Oifo, who has been on a visit to Australia, is expected back next week. Tho North Beach Tennis Club held two competitions at last week-end. After a very fine game between Messrs liarioy, Cooke and H. Brown the former won the Stranger Cup. Messrs A. C. Blank and li. Bean won the iaukeo doubles. Mrs A. Floranco, who has Keen staying with Mrs Aldridge, Marriott's Road, is returning Home. The final meeting in connection with last year's gala is advertised for tonight at the Surf. Club Pavilion.
