Building permits issued during the past month by the Heathcoto County Council were as follow:—Bromlov 3 (£1400), Cashmere 5 (£7185) Hillsborough 2 (£7O). Hie Athenic arrived at Auckland last night from Southampton with 678 passengers, including 406 immigrants mostly assisted. Many of the latter are women who have come out to marry New Zealanders. A cross-country flight to Invell was made yesterday by Captain Euan Dickson, Hying the Avro machine in which the Cook Strait crossing was made. His passengers were Mr and Mrs Coe, of Invell, both out and home. A landing was, made in a paddock adjoining the homestead at 2.55 p.m., after a flight of twenty-five minutes, including several minutes in tho selection of a landing ground. Photographs were taken, and the propeller was then ,swung again by Mr Rennie, who had mado a flight to Doylcston and back a few days previously. At tho request of the pasongers, Captain Dickson liew over the school, some two miles behind Dwell, where the children and teachers turned out to see the machine circling low down. Coming homo tho Avro flow over Lincoln College, and arrived at the aerodrome at 3,35 p.m., after a twenty minutes’ flight. A meeting of the Board of Governors' of the Canterbury Agricultural College was held at the college, Lincoln, on Tuesday; present—Mr H. A. Knight (chairman), Dr Chilton, Hon D. Buddo and Messrs Thomas Blackley and R. W. Lochhead. An apology was received from Air Deans. Dr Chilton, the Hon D. .Buddo and Messrs J. Deans and R. W. Lochhead were appointed to represent tho board at the Forestry School conference convened by the Progress League. A letter from the convener of tho Agricultural Committee, asking the chairman and director to attend a conference on rural economics and rural education, was received, and it was decided to reply stating that tho matter had already been fully and satisfactorily dealt with, in the opinion of tho board, at a conference in Wellington between the Agricultural and Education Departments, at which the college was represented. The question of advanced instruction in agriculture, as required for the B.Agr. degree and for research work in agriculture, was discussed at length, and the opinion was expressed that co-opcration between Lincoln College and Canterbury College was desirable, and that Canterbury College should make special provision for such students. It was decided that tho members of the board should arrange to visit and inspect the reserves at Hakateramea next December, to determine whether.it would bo advisable to further subdivide those runs when the leases are offered for sale next February.
