LADIES’ TOURNAMENT. OPENS AT GISBORNE, (Special to tho “Star.”) m GISBORNE, September 6. The •annual Ladies’ Hookey Tournament which commenced on Saturday, was favoured with .fine weather, and about three thousand. spectators witflossed the play. The Poverty Bay Association had made complete arrangements for tho entertainment and billeling of the visitors. Manawatu and Ganterbury arrived on Friday morning, and Auckland, Wanganui, Wellington and Wairarapa on Saturday evening. Poverty Bay A, Manawatu, Hawke’s May, Ganterbury and Wellington comprisc tho A section, and Wanganui, Wairarapa, Poverty Bay B and Auckland the B section. The winners of each section meet in the final on Friday next, the winner of the final taking the Gup, and the losers the Flood Shield. Hie grounds are in excellent order. CANTERBURY y. HAWKE’S BAT. Canterbury met Hawke’s Bay on Satwinning by throe goals to one. ihe winners played with fine combination, both in defence and attack. Miss Leslie, who bad a roving commission between five-eighths ymd goalkeeper, gaye an excellent display, and her remarkable judgment in turning defence into attack was largely instfumcntal in Canterbury’s success. j Both Aliases L. Cross and Cawley played magnificently until the last quarter of an hour, when all the Canterbury team were showing signs of shortness of condition. Tho Canterbury half line is a clever °n C ’ Yn’ii lo being the cleverest of tlm threc. Her energy upset the opposition left wing attack, and her pace ft _J 5Cr iii good stead in tackling. Miss G. Cross was very good as a left half, keeping well on the game. Alisg Rogers was not- up to her usual form, and has evidently not recovered from her trip. The forward line wept «weU. together, and played with 1 fin© combination. Miss Rossitor was the cleverest forward of tho day, and her clever stick work was the admiration of all. Alias Johnston showed great promise as inside left. Miss Barr was invaluable in the centre, but needs jo quicken her shots at goal. The two right wing players wore not at their best, but they managed to do their share towards success. Tho Hawke’s Bay players are a clever lot and were the fitter team of the two, but they lacked the brilliant combination of their opponentsThe forwards were very clever. Aliases Stairmand, AVard and Leon showing out prominently. The goal scored by Hawke’s Bay was incorrectly credited to Alias Ward instead of to Miss Leon. The half line was completely beaten by the opposition combination. The backs and goalkeeper were very good, especially in defending the goal in the scrambles. POVERTY BAT v. MANAWATU. Manawatu, who wore outclassed by Poverty Bay, are unfortunate in losing several of the team,/ originally selected to make the trip, including the Alisses Green and KersaJ- The players are very young and speedy, but are inclined to crowd too much. The centre half is a very clever girl and energetic. Miss Hancock effected some- excellent saves in goal, but lacks judgment in coming out. Poverty Bay are very fit, and will be hard to beat. The forwards are speedy, and keep their places well, and the halves are keen and good at intercepting. The right hack gave a fine display of stick work, and both backs wore sure fields.
