IN DEFENCE.

TO lire EDITOR. Sir,—-.1. notice numerous letters appearing in various papers, bitterly complaining about the misdeeds of tffef Tramway Board, and the Woolston Borough Council. I think a. word should be said on the other side, as well; there are always two sides to snob complaints. For years and years tho "Woolston- Borough Council’s sanitation rate was tho enormous on© of 10s 6d per annum. It works out about threepence per week, and it is only since the war that matters have become a little disorganised. With horse feed up to double what it used to he, a contractor had no option hut to raise his price, and the council had to pass it on to flic ratepayers; not likely they Wore going to pay it out of their own pockets. T noticed a wild statement about the state of the tram tracks through Woolston. The statement is made, that from St Peter’s, to Bamford Street there are scores of places where the lines are showing from twoto four inches hare. T went over the tracks from Sr Peter's to the Tanks and measured more than a dozen places, and, tho most rail f found showing was 1-J inch. Tiip majority of the places I tried were from ?to and in a few 1 inch. I rode backwards and forwards over the worst places, without more trouble ihau whore yon meet a piece of rough repair work anywhere on tho streets of Christchurch. When you can ride a bicycle, them are no four inches. The Christchurch Tramway Board meet to transact business, not to wrangle and chuck-off at each other like a lot of schoolboys, as some public bodies I could mention do; and the trams under their control will compare favourably with any in New Zealand.—l am, etc., T. W. P WEIGHT. Woali.lon, September 3, 1920.
