The first match for the Hatch Clip competition for interprovincial primary school boys’ teams was played nt Lancaster Park this afternoon between teams representing the primary schools of Otago and Canterbury, The Hatch Cup is to bo competed for annually amongst teams of primary gchool boys of any province in tho Dominion. A series' of breaches by OUgo enabled Canterbury to take the offensive, but Otago cleared and attacked. Canterbury had several free hits, but did not take advantage if them end Otago continued to press. Canterbury took the ball from a roll-in. and from 3, scramble Rogers scored. Otago kept Canterbury in their own half. A good attack by Canterbury forwards was well Stopped by Burns and Otago attacked. Rush teok tho ball mid. passed tho goalkeeper, and equalised the score. GISBORNE TOURNEY. WIN FOR CANTERBURY. [Per Phess Association.] n ., „ GIBBORNE, September I. The _ Now Zealand ladies’ licckev championship tournament opened this afternoon in fine weather. There was a large attenrtanoe. Tim opening match mulled as follows:—Canterbury (holders of the championship) 3, Hawke's Bay 1. (Special to " Star.”) f , GISBORNE, September 1. The New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Tournament commenced io-diiy a.l Gisborne in line weather and in the presence of large crowds. Nine teams entered. # Canterbury met Hawke's Bay in the opening match of the tournament. Canterbury attacked early, but failed to .score. Hawke’s Bay retaliated up the right wing, but a series of twenty-fives was the only result. A tine run by Miss Rossilor put Canterbury on the attars, and Miss Barr had a. shot which narrowly missed. Canterbury returned, and a .tussle took place in the goal mouth, which was cleared. A few minuics after Canlcrbuty returned and Miss Rnsjjtcr opened the score from a scramble. Hawke's Bay attacked from the bully, and Canterbury were forced. Tho Rods came again, but Hawke s Bay saved brilliantly, Canterbury returned and the Hawke’s Bay __ goalkeeper stopped foolishly, and hit out. Miss Johnston scored the second goal for Canterbury. Give and take nlay followed until half-time, with the game in Canterbury’s favour, the score being Canterbury 2, Hawke’s Bay 0. A scramble there ended in Miss Barr adding tho third goal, Off-side by Hawke’,a Baj spoilt a chance. Hawke’s Bay came again, and only good defence by Misses A. Cross and Leslie saved a score.
