Mr M'Dougall, wlio appeared for the defendant, said that the latter could not remember the incident but would plead guilty. Ho was hardly responsible for his actions, and was, at present, ill. Mr Upham said that the Tramway Hoard, in view of the defendant's line war record, did not press for a penalty. Mr Day said that a man's past service was nothing if ho were now in his right mind. Sellars 10s, Philip Carrington 10s, and on a second charge ordered to pay costs, Gwendoline Carrington 10s, Arthur Dawson ordered to pay costs, Joseph Johnston 10s. Convicted of driving a vehicle without a light, Charles Munro Smith was lined 10s with costs. Tho following motorists wcro also convicted and lined the amounts sta.ted:—Leslio L. Richards, motoring in Christchurch Domain, £2 with costs; Percy G. Dohorty, leaving car without lights, 10s, leaving car unattended 10s; Harold Edward Curtis, leaving car unattended 10s, leaving car without lights 10s; Edgar Somerset, leaving car unattended, 10s; James Ford Simpson, cutting corners, £1; Frederick John Hanna, speeding over intersection, ordered to pay costs; Esmond S. L. Harper, speeding over street intersection, 10s; Thomas Tanscy, jun., and Alexander Gordon, exceeding speed limit, £1 each; ■George Scott, Joseph Oxley, Bonjamin Hamoton, £2 each; Henry I). Chaklin, Ernest Reynolds Adcock, £1 each; Harold C. Amyes, £2; Thomas L. Jones, speeding over street intersection, £2; Thomas L. Jones, speeding in manner dangerous to the public, ordered to pay costs. MISSING VARNISH. l Before Mr S. E. M'Carthy, S.M., in No. 2 Court, George Edward Pengclly 'was charged with stealing, on August 30, at Christchurch, a tin of varnish, valued at 30s, the property of P. and D. Duncan. Chief-Detective M'llvenev. who pro- ' scouted, said that the accused took tho varnish from a workshop, and gave it away. it had not been recovered. Accused was convicted and ordered to como up for sentence when called upon, and also to refund the value of the missing varnish. LYTTELTON. Before Mr F. Knight, J.P., one first offender was convicted and discharged. Arthur Spencer, a waterside -worker, was charged with stealing a quantity or' valued at 2s, tho property of tho Union Steam Ship Company. On tho application of the police the case was remanded to September 8, bail being granted.
