FORGING CHEQUES.

CHRISTCHURCH FIRM DEFRAUDED. * At tlu* Christchurch Magistrates Court to-day, before Mr V. G. J)av, S-M., Robert Ibell, alias Robert Bell, alias Snell, was charged with forging and uttering on July 27 and 29, 1018, three cheques for the respective amounts of £5, £5 and £S 17s 4a, with intent to defraud. Chief-Detective M’llveney prosecuted. The three charges wore taken together. George Dougins Cameron, secretary Adams, Ltd., said that on July 7. 1918, the accused represented himself ns J. H. Ibell, cycle, dealer, Ashburton, and ashed for his account. This was handed to him, for £8 17s 4d. Ho ashed witness to write out a cheque for the amount, and the accused signed it_ as J. H. Ibell. Later he induced witness to fill in another cheque form for £5, which accused signed, and was handed the money. Witness’s firm had an account with J. IT. Ibell, Ashburton. Leonard G. Osmcnt, accountant. Adams Ltd., said that accused called again on July 29 and at his request witness filled in u cheque for £5 and. cashed it, John Henry Ibell. labourer, Ashburton, formerly a .cycle dealer, said that ho gave the accused •no authority to .act for him. Henry H. Boddington, manager Bank of Now South Wales, Ashburton, said that the cheques (’produced) were presented at the bank, but wero marked “no account.” Accused made no statement and pleaded guilty. He was committed to tho Supremo Court for sentence.
