LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Among those who made flights from the Sockburn aerodrome this week wero Miss Taylor an 3 Messrs 0. Kennelly, J. N. Wickens, E. H. Selman. T. Baty, P. Delargoy «ud A. Davis. Many tributes wero paid yesterday at the Waikari Hospital opening function to the excellence of the Christchurch Hospital staff, somo of the speakers claiming that it had no superior, if any equal, in Nm Zealand. Special mention was„ made of the work during the past few years of the JLady Superintendent, Miss Muir. This lady's tamo and popularity wore in ample evidence among tho general public yesterday, no one present being more besieged by amateur photographers. " Please post me a copy of the circular that v/as sent out to sheep-farmers asking us to give up our wol profits to tho British Seamen's Fund." wrote a northern farmer in a letter read at last night's meeting of the local branch of the Navy League. H l, like many others, signed under ti misapprehension as to tho position, and in the belief that nearly all would do the same. Now I find that a great many of our richest men are giving nothing. If this is carried through it will do a groat deal of harm to all future appeals for patriotic objects. The willing horse will then be willing no more." Tho secretary reported having replied that) ho thought the circular was issued bv Mr Edward Nowman, M.P., who would no doubt supply a copy of it. The chairman (Mr j H. J. Marnner) said he thought that discussion of the letter was inadvisable. Mr 11.. Evans was, as one speaker said, a proud man yesterday at tho opening of the Waikari Cottage Hospital. He received many congratulations at the result of his support to the proposal to establish such an institution. He declared that ho had been told his fault was that he did not use enough "soft soap," and scrubbed people too hard. Later, ho referred to those who had opposed the construction of tho hospital, and said that ho hoped that these people would be the first to uso the new wards. Tho monthly meeting of the Rangiora District Fruitgrowers' Association was held at Loburn on Wednesday evening, Mr T. J. Hughes presiding over a good attendance. Correspondence was received from the manager of the Federated Fruitgrowers' Association, calling 'attention to the unsatisfactory way in which some fruit cases were nailed, which is very detrimental to the sale of the fruit. It was resolved to invite xMr G. Bradford (Government Orchard Instructor) to give an address on " Fireblight" at Rangiora on tho last Wednesday in September. Four new members were elected, three of whom aro returned soldiers. Plans fo> the proposed memorial entrance to Lancaster Park were submitted by Messrs M. and J. Guthrie at last evening's meeting of the Park Board <rf Control: and it was decided to apply for a building permit and then to call for tenders for the execution of the work, although several members gave it as their opinion that the shortage of labour and material almost precluded the erection of the structure. The plan shows a handsome edilice in ferro-concrete, 100 ft in length, including the double iron carriage gates at each end, and 12ft deep. In the centre is a roomy office 16ft by 10ft, and on either side, under substantial cover, are five turnstiles, fronted by collapsible gates. The cost of the erection of tho entrance gate according to plan was estimated at about £I6OO.
