Stevens, Director of the Stunner School for the Deaf, in a lecture to members of the North Canterbury Educational Institute last evening. “If teachers do not know something about the mechanism of speech it will be a difficult matter for them to correct deficiencies in tho speech of their pupils—it will not be easy to set the children a good model of clear, euphonious speech. Speech deficiencies arc common among children, and the fault lies in tho modern system of education, which places far too little importance on the science of speech. What wo have to say should be said clearly. Nowadays there is too much faulty utterance. I was in tho Parliamentary Gallery a year ago, and it was remarkable how one had to strain one’s ears to hear what our members were saying. It was almost impossible to hear what a great number of them were saying. Even many of our preachers fail in this respect.” Shirts far a Song And t ey are new and fresh.
