The number seven grass track was open for fast work ai d most of the horses with early engagements were galloped on it. Night raider and Checkmate opened proceedings with a smart performance over five j furlongs. They kept together all the way, hut Nightraider, who had an advantage in tho weights, «as a comfortable winner. Tyne, with a companion over the last five, ran six furlongs in good style, finishing well. Fiery Cross rattled over half a mile smartly end Counterscarp moved freely in a spin tve.r five furlongs. Royal .Star and Chneronia were companions in a useful working gallop. Kilrnsh was responsible for an attractive gallop over seven furlongs. Loyal 'Arch, who accompanied him in the early stages, being ens-d oft in the straight. l\ohu and Fahrinndo ran a mile together, finishing veil, while Bon Spec covered five I furlongs in smart time, without being fully I extended. Hewitt havo written to tho president of the Racing Conference stating that no good result can como of their prosecuting their appeals, on the ground that iWir suspension expires ten days after the date set down for the hearing of the appeals, and if the appeals were successful there aro no further meetings this senon at which they could ride. If the appeals were unsuccessful they would bo heavy financial losers in taking an advocate and themselves to Wellington. They therefore heg to withdraw their appeals, and respectfully submil that their deposits should he refunded.
